Train services to end in West Dunbartonshire at 4pm today as Storm Dudley approaches

Gale-force winds and heavy rain are set to batter West Dunbartonshire this week as two storms roll in and the Met Office issues two separate weather warnings.

Storms Dudley and Eunice look set to affect the area, where an amber warning is in place from today (Wednesday) followed by a further yellow alert on Thursday and Friday.

Scotrail has meanwhile announced services in the central belt will be wound down by 4pm when the worst of Storm Dudley is expected to sweep across the country.

In a statement, they said: "We know the impact that the earlier withdrawal of services will have on customers but it’s a necessary step to ensure the safety of our staff and customers due to the severe weather.

"The strength of the winds expected could damage infrastructure, blowing debris and trees onto tracks and damaging equipment such as overhead electric power lines and signals."

The Met Office predicts that Storm Dudley will affect the UK on Wednesday night and Thursday, "bringing a period of very strong and disruptive winds."

The forecast adds: "Very strong westerly winds are expected to develop across western Scotland and northern Northern Ireland late Wednesday and extend eastward across southern Scotland and northern England during the evening.

"There is still some uncertainty in the timing and location of the strongest winds but there is the potential for inland wind gusts of 70-80 mph in places. Gusts of 80-90 mph are possible around exposed coasts and hills."
