Train journey from Glasgow named one of Europe's best family railway adventures by National Geographic

A train journey that departs from Glasgow has been named as one of the best in Europe for families by a luxury travel magazine.

National Geographic Traveler recently published their guide to 'the best family railway adventures in Europe for 2022', featuring six different journeys from across the continent.

The likes of the Paris to Barcelona trip and Switzerland's Chocolate Train were included, but in at number three is a service that departs from Glasgow Queen Street.

The West Highland Line, which transports people to the North West Coast via the Highlands, finds itself included on the list, with 'plenty of reasons' given for the journey being an 'ideal family adventure', including the opportunity to travel over the Glenfinnan Viaduct - made famous by Harry Potter.

National Geographic writers say: "A must for any UK rail-based shortlist, this riotously handsome line threads its way through the brawny peaks of the Scottish Highlands en route to the North West coast. Whether you ride the whole line starting in Glasgow or pick things up midway at Fort William, you’re in for a treat — particularly if the sun shows up.

"There are plenty of reasons why this is an ideal family adventure — steam trains, fish and chips at the coastal terminus of Mallaig, valleys, mountains and the unforgettable views. Plus it’s inextricably linked to the Harry Potter films, with the curving arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct a highlight even for mere Muggles.

"The full journey from Glasgow to Mallaig takes a total of around five hours 30 minutes on a scheduled ScotRail passenger service (this can also be joined in Fort William). The Jacobite Steam Train travels from Fort William to Mallaig up to twice daily between April and October, taking around two hours in each direction".

Certainly one worth considering with the kids this summer!
