V/Line passenger train derails in collision with truck at Goornong near Bendigo

Victoria police are investigating the circumstances of a train derailment in Goornong, near Bendigo, after a passenger train collided with a truck just before 8am on Wednesday.

Inspector Brett Sampson said the V/Line train collided with the truck travelling on the Midland Highway near Murchison Road.

"From what we understand it is the Echuca to Bendigo [train] travelling south to Bendigo, and the truck has been travelling west entering the intersection at the train crossing," Inspector Sampson said.

The accident caused the train's locomotive to derail, while the passenger carriages remained on the track.

Passengers uninjured

None of the train's 40 passengers were injured, but both the train driver and the driver of the truck, a man in his 50s, are being treated by paramedics on scene for minor injuries.

"We understand there are no injuries to the passengers of the train," Inspector Sampson said.

"They have all been alighted from the train, put on a bus and headed back into town.

The rail line remains closed in both directions between Bendigo and Echuca.

Inspector Sampson said the police were in the process of handing over the incident scene to V/Line.

"We're here to make sure the scene is safe in relation to fuel spillages, batteries and anything to do with fire related. They will check and deem the site safe," he said.

"Our message is always the same, you need to be disciplined and focused when you are driving and looking both ways when you are crossing any intersection."

V/Line chief executive Matt Carrick says coaches will replace trains for the next few days while investigations by the National Rail Safety take place and the track is repaired.
