Train delays for 'tens of thousands' of commuters was caused by two selfish passengers

Train journeys for tens of thousands of rail passengers trying to get home were delayed by the actions of two people who forced open train doors.

The pair had been attempting to board a service at Hither Green station when they tried to force themselves on the train.

Their actions meant electricity on the tracks had to be switched off for safety reasons, causing delays at London stations on Thursday.

Commuters were confronted with "dangerous" scenes at London Bridge station as large crowds of passengers bunched together in waiting areas and on platforms.

One fed up commuter said: “Here we go again, another night, more chaos at London Bridge.

“Honestly the scenes tonight at London Bridge show nothing has been learned from the apparent safety review. Why do people have to put up with this? Sort it out.”

MP for Orpington, Gareth Bacon, revealed he has written to the managing director of Southeastern, Steve White, demanding change.

He said: "Before the next timetable review, I have written to Southeastern on behalf of the 325 constituents who responded to my survey.

“The timetable introduced in December needs to be fixed as it has caused overcrowding and lengthened commutes for some.

“I urge Southeastern to listen.”

A spokesman for Southeastern told My London: "Yesterday evening two customers forced open the doors of a train that had come to a standstill outside Hither Green, meaning electricity to the railway had to be cut off in that area for safety reasons.

“This incident caused delays to several trains and at some of our stations crowd management plans were activated by our team to ensure everyone could complete their journeys safely and as quickly as possible.

"Tens of thousands of people's journeys were disrupted last night because of the actions of a small number of individuals.

“We know how frustrating delays are, but when they do occur, for safety, customers must wait on the train until the doors are open at a station or they are instructed otherwise by staff. “We encourage customers whose journeys were delayed for over 15 minutes last night to make a claim here.”
