Rail passengers are facing travel chaos after a 'major fault' sparked a raft of cancellations to Scots services.
ScotRail announced a major fault with its communication system had hit on Monday morning ahead of rush hour.
Taking to social media at 5.30am to warn passengers, the train operators said: "Due to a major fault with the communication system between drivers and signallers, services have been severely affected on the following routes."
Network Rail ScotRail updated passengers, writing: "Fibre cable failure has been identified as the cause of the fault. Specialist teams have been requested to make the necessary repairs. We're sorry for the disruption caused by the fault with the GSM-R system."
The issue is affecting Helensburgh Central– Edinburgh, Balloch-Airdrie, Dalmuir–Larkhall, Milngavie–Motherwell, Milngavie-Edinburgh via Airdrie, as well as Motherwell–Dalmuir, Dalmuir-Whifflet, Larkhall–Milngavie.
According to ScotRail's journey checker, 96 services have already had to be cancelled today.
Passengers are being urged to 'check to see if their journey is being affected before heading to the station' and making alternative travel plans.
ScotRail has told passengers they do not have a timescale for when services can resume and have apologised for the disruption.
There is ticket acceptance on Whitelaws buses between Larkhall, Hamilton and Motherwell, and Edinburgh Trams - between Edinburgh and Edinburgh Park - are also accepting valid tickets or Smartcards.
It also includes Inner Circle: St Enoch-Glasgow Buchanan Street (Queen Street) - Partick * Outer Circle: Partick - Glasgow Buchanan Street (Queen Street)-St Enoch.
Rail shuttle services are being introduced between Edinburgh and Bathgate Between Milngavie and Springburn Between Balloch and Shettleston, and Helensburgh and Carntyne.
In an update shortly before 12pm, Network Rail Scotland said: "Engineers have found the source of the fault and are now working on a repair.
" We're unable to provide a timescale for the fibre optic cable repair at this time, but will keep you updated. We're sorry for the disruption this fault has caused passengers today."
