Trailer for horror film 'Protein' shot in Swansea and Llanelli is released

The streets look dark and the action even darker.

And when gunshots rang out, residents had every right to be concerned.

But the disturbance on the streets of Loughor a year ago was in fact nothing more sinister than the sounds of a film in production.

And now residents have the chance to get a taste of what it was all about, with the release of the first trailer for the horror thriller called Protein. The films tells the tale of a traumatised serial killer who turns up in a small town in south Wales causing havoc amongst the local small-time criminal underworld. And it is the work of Carmarthenshire-based production company Broadside Films, directed by Tony Burke and produced by Tom Gripper. Tom said: "The film is currently going through the post-production process but will be released sometime later this year. We're hoping to do a festival run first before it goes to wider distribution, but we're also hoping to have some local showings in Wales, particularly near where it was filmed.

"I'm really proud of it. Even before we cut it, it was really exciting. It is really well directed and really well performed, and thanks to the incredible crew, it is looking really good. I'm really excited for people to see it.

"The trailer features some of the scenes we filmed in Gorseinon and Llanelli so people will be able to recognise those. And of course we're really grateful to the residents of Swansea and Carmarthenshire for their patience and putting up with us, as well as the crew at Sin City in Swansea, who were amazing and very accommodating, we're super thankful to them." These are all the TV and film projects being made in Wales in spring, 2022.

Filming of scenes largely took place in Swansea and Llanelli, as well as in Ammanford and Penlan. The shooting scene which hit the headlines a year ago centred around Ritchie's Laundry Services in Bryn Road in Loughor, when local residents were notified in advance of filming.

The cast includes Charles Dale, Richard Mylan, Claire Cage, Kai Owen, Richard Elis, Kevin McCurdy and Jamie Kenna - currently starring in Coronation Street. Its lead is Craig Russell, the man behind 2017's cult sci-fi comedy/horror film Canaries, telling the story of an alien invasion which coincided with a New Year's Eve party in Lower Cwmtwrch, and won a number of awards. He is currently filming in Morocco for another lead role in a new Netflix series.
