Tragedy struck near the summit of Germany's highest peak, the Zugspitze, as an 18-year-old man lost his life after being struck by lightning. The young German resident was part of a group of three men who had taken the mountain railway up to the Zugspitze late Sunday afternoon and then proceeded to climb to the summit, which stands at an elevation of 2,962 meters (9,718 feet) above sea level.
As the men were descending from the summit, lightning struck multiple times, resulting in the 18-year-old suffering a fatal electric shock. Recovery efforts were hindered by the ongoing storm conditions in the area. The Zugspitze, located in the Alps on the border between Germany and Austria, is a popular destination for visitors seeking breathtaking views and outdoor adventures.
The incident on the Zugspitze was not the only one during the stormy weather that swept across parts of Germany on Sunday. In Delmenhorst, a family of eight sought shelter under a tree in a park when lightning struck, injuring all of them. Among the injured were a five-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, who were rushed to hospitals with life-threatening injuries.
