Tragic death of man in St Ann's raised unanswered questions at inquest

An inquest into the death of a 27-year-old man left unanswered questions as a coroner could not be clear he intended to bring his life to an end. Police were contacted by East Midlands Ambulance Service on July 16 last year after Toby James Patten was not breathing in Hawkridge Gardens, Beacon Hill Rise, St Ann's.

Witnesses had noticed him as they passed in a taxi and stopped and went to him, beckoning the help of a cyclist, a Nottingham Council House inquest heard on Friday (June 2).

A fence post was broken to release a ligature to the floor from his man bag. One of the taxi passengers performed CPR.

Mr Patten was pronounced dead and identified by a passport in his bag. A cordon was created by officers and the road closed.

His partner arrived on the scene and was obviously distraught, the inquest heard. She said they had been in town together, had an argument and she left him in Beacon Hill Rise.

A neighbour reported to police she had heard a man and woman arguing - and saw the woman walk off. Mr Patten's medical report referred to some triage some time ago, but nothing of much note.

Analysis of his blood found a prescription drug often used to treat anxiety, Ketamine (a dissociative aesthetic), and cannabis was detected. His cause of death was "hanging".

But assistant coroner, Neena Sharma, said: "I can't be clear he had an intention to bring his life to an end. The affect of Ketamine would have no doubt clouded his judgement." She gave a narrative conclusion, adding that Mr Patten died as a result of hanging from a post whilst under the influence of drugs, including Ketamine and other drugs, which clouded his judgement.
