Tragic death leaves Bramcote community in mourning

Residents of Bramcote have spoken of their shock following the "terrible accident" in which an 83-year-old woman died and a teenager was left injured. The incident happened on the A52. Shortly after 3pm on Tuesday, November 1,.

The collision on the A52 Derby Road between Priory Island and Bramcote Island, involved a vehicle and a pedestrian.

The driver, an 83-year-old woman, also received treatment at the scene and was taken to hospital but was sadly confirmed dead a short time later. The pedestrian, a teenage girl, received treatment at the scene and was taken to hospital after being struck by the car. Police said she suffered serious injuries which she is currently receiving medical treatment for and remains in hospital.

The tragic event has unsettled the community in the area, many of which have offered their condolences and best wishes to the families. Stacey Brown, Manager of the Nurseryman Pub and Grill on Derby Road, said: "We offer our condolences to the woman's family and friends.

"It was a terrible accident. We wish the girl a speedy recovery and all of the best to her family."

Finance director, Paul Brame, 36, said: "I wasn't aware of what had actually happened, we heard the air ambulance and then when we saw it. The police had gotten there quickly and it was all blocked off.

"Unfortunately it's a horrible accident that has happened." Sonia Stevensons, a retired Bramcote resident in her seventies, said: "I got home about five minutes before it happened.

"It's very sad, and I send my condolences to the family." Sonia explained that the road used to be a lot more dangerous and has been "a lot better" since the 40mph speed limit and cameras were introduced.

She said: "We still get some whizzing past, but it's a lot calmer than it used to be." A woman who did not wish to be named described the incident as "awful."

She said: "That's just really sad." When asked about the main road going through Bramcote, she said: "We've only been here around a year so we have not really experienced much like this to be honest, it is the most serious incident we have seen since we have been here."

Commercial manager, Sameer Chaddha, 39, of Bramcote, said: "It happened all the way at the top of the road, so we didn't see much expect the blocked up traffic and the police go by around 3pm. The road is bad, we once had someone drive into our fence.

"There's been a couple of serious accidents further up where people have clipped each other and flipped over. The street between the M1 and Bramcote used to have a lot of accidents."

Retired, Charles Penlington, 70, said: "We wish the girl all the best, it is a sad moment for the area.

Charles explained that some of the crossings on the road can be "dangerous" but overall the road is a lot better now than it previously has been due to the traffic lights and speed cameras. He added: "It's unfair for people to say it's a bad road."

When asked about the incident, a 75 year old who did not wish to be named said: " I was stuck in the traffic. I offer my condolences to the lady's family and best wishes to the teenager's."

Sergeant Craig Luckett, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Road Policing and Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “A woman sadly died in hospital following this tragic incident.

“Her family is aware and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time. Specially-trained officers have been assigned to support them as they come to terms with this terrible loss.

“We would now like to appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or has any dash-cam footage or information. We urge you to get in touch with Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident 462 of 1 November 2022.”
