The force said no further details would be released until a next of kin was informed.
The tragedy resulted in the closure of all railway lines between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly throughout Friday afternoon and early evening.
Many services were cancelled.
Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales services were said to have been affected.
Transpennine Express said on its website: "Can customers please be advised that due to a person being hit by a train in the Gatley area, between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly, all lines are blocked."
The tragedy meant no trains were running to Mauldeth Road, Burnage, East Didsbury, Gatley, Heald Green, Styal and Manchester Airport railway stations.
Buses replaced trains and tickets were accepted on Metrolink.
All lines reopened at 4.40pm and services through Gatley resumed.
