Tragedy as pedestrian dies after collision with car on the A1 in Northumberland

A pedestrian has died in Northumberland after being hit by a car on the A1 late on Tuesday night.

Emergency services were called out to the scene but the person was pronounced dead by paramedics, with their family currently being supported by officers from Northumbria Police.

The road remains closed between the A1068 and B1340 on Wednesday morning with diversions in place. It has not yet been confirmed when the road will reopen.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 11.45pm yesterday (Tuesday), police received a report that a car had collided with a pedestrian on the A1 northbound at Alnwick, near to the A1068. Emergency services attended however, sadly the person was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

"Their family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers at this difficult time. The A1068 near Alnwick remains closed and local diversions are in place.

"Officers remain in the area to carry out enquiries and offer any reassurance to the public. Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log NP-20230411-1308."

The North East Ambulance Service issued the following statement: "We received a call just before midnight last night to an incident on the A1 north near Alnwick. We sent a emergency ambulance and a specialist paramedic."
