Medomsley Road remained closed until 9.30am on Friday morning as accident investigation work got underway.
The road was shut from McNicholas Laundry Service to Glenroyd House in both directions and the vehicle was removed by a crane.
The crash also caused a power cut to a number of properties on the street. Northern Powergrid workers were spotted on the road trying to restore power to homes.
A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called at 11.55pm yesterday (May 19) to a collision in which a van had collided with a house in Medomsley Road, Consett.
"Sadly, a male occupant of the van was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The road was closed until 9.30am today to allow for recovery of the vehicle and for collision investigators to work at the scene."
