Tragedy as hillwalker dies after falling on Scots mountain

A hillwalker has died after falling from near the peak of a Munro in the West Highlands.

The man, aged 32, was attended to by Coastguard, mountain rescue teams and Police Scotland in a huge emergency response involving a helicopter, on February 7 at Ben Cruachan, near Oban, Argyll and Bute.

However, the rescue was hindered by cloud, an Oban Mountain Rescue spokesperson said. Police confirmed today the man sadly died, and his family have been informed.

A spokesperson for Oban Mountain Rescue Team said: "The team were called out at 12:30pm on Tuesday 7th February to reports of a hillwalker who had fallen from near the summit of Ben Cruachan.

"HM coastguard helicopter Rescue 151 from Inverness attempted to reach the casualty site but low cloud prevented several attempts to reach the accident site.

"Team members ascended the hill on foot and reached the casualty who sadly had not survived the fall. Team members, along with assistance from Police ScotlandWest MRT and Arrochar MRT lowered the casualty by stretcher back to the hydro tracks at the back of Cruachan Dam.

"Meanwhile other team members assisted the casualties walking companion and dog back to the bottom track. Our thoughts and condolences are with the casualties family and friends at this time.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, a search and rescue operation was launched, following a report a 32-year-old man had fallen from a peak at Ben Cruachan, Loch Awe.

"Emergency services, including mountain rescue teams, attended. However, the man died, and his family have been notified."
