A British tourist has died in a suspected drowning in Lanzarote.

The 62-year-old man was pulled unresponsive from the water at Playa Dorada beach near the south coast island resort of Playa Blanca.

Lifeguards and medical responders attempted to save the man but were unable to do so.

The alarm was raised just after 1.30pm local time on Thursday.

A spokesman for the local Civil Guard said: “The dead man is a British national aged 62.

“He was spotted floating in the water and pulled out of the ocean by lifeguards who tried to revive him before health professionals arrived and continued to attempt to save him.

“Those efforts sadly proved unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The post-mortem will determine the cause of death and whether it was the result of drowning.”

A well-placed source added: “The man was a tourist who was on holiday with his partner.

“He was was described as being with relatives when he died.”

A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency response co-ordination centre added: “We received an alert at 1.35pm on Thursday asking for assistance for a bather who had been pulled from the water after apparently drowning.

“Emergency responders sent to the scene carried out basic and advanced recovery techniques without success and the man was pronounced dead.”

An investigating judge is looking into the incident, although police sources said there was nothing at this stage to indicate any suspicious circumstances.

The holidaymaker has not been named.

Playa Blanca where the tragedy occurred, is described online as a safe swimming area because of two man-made breakwaters constructed with rocks which stretch out into the sea from either side of the beach.

It is one of Playa Blanca’s three beaches.
