GMP said officers were first alerted to the tragedy off Mellor Street in the Spotland area of Rochdale at around 3.45pm on Friday afternoon.

The man's body was found in a small area of woodland behind Mellor Street garage, witnesses said.

The area backs on to the rear of a row of terraced houses on Bury Road and is near a small car park.

The Manchester Evening News understands a mechanic working at the garage found the body and raised the alarm.

Police sealed the area off and the man was recovered later.

It's understood a file of evidence will be passed on to a coroner's office once police investigations are complete and identification is established.

No further details have been revealed.
