Trafford council is looking for a new director of public health who will earn £105,000 a year. The authority is also to ‘re-establish’ its director of human resources role with the successful candidate set to earn £92,000 a year.
An extraordinary meeting of the authority’s employment committee is due to rubberstamp the moves today (Monday, February 6). With 2,300 ‘non-school’ staff, Trafford is one of the biggest employers in the borough.
A report to the committee from chief executive Sara Todd said the current director of health Eleanor Roaf will retire in May and the salary for the post is being 'uplifted [from £95,000] in recognition of pay comparisons across Greater Manchester'. It said the appointment will ensure the council meets its statutory requirements and 'that public health is at the heart of the council's priorities'.
Ms Todd added: "We would also want to acknowledge the important leadership provided by Eleanor Roaf in navigating us successfully through the challenges faced in the recent Covid 19 pandemic." Meanwhile, the new HR post was needed to ‘ensure the council has the capacity and oversight needed to address business-critical workforce-related issues now and in the future’.
“These include a challenging programme of modernisation and reform across the council and adoption of new technologies that will change the way services are delivered, putting people at the heart of these plans,” it said. “The salary level is consistent with director roles in the authority. It should be noted that the establishment of the post on a permanent basis will be achieved on a cost-neutral basis.”
The HR role has been vacant since July 2018 when the then post-holder was promoted internally. Ms Todd's report said the appointment would ‘strengthen the corporate leadership team’ and ‘ensure all employment-related risk is managed and mitigated effectively’.
The new HR chief will have responsibility for health, safety and wellbeing for Trafford.
