Traffic queues for miles on M62 after 'concerns for safety of man'

Parts of the M62 were plunged into chaos this evening after cars were seen driving on the "wrong side" of a slip road to avoid queuing traffic.

The M62 was closed at Tarbock Island both Westbound and Eastbound "as a precaution" due to an ongoing police incident while emergency services were at the scene. Merseyside Police urged motorists to avoid the area.

A spokesman for the force said: "At around 7.45pm officers received a report of a concern for safety of a man on a motorway bridge at the bottom of Windy Arbour, Junction 6." Huge queues were spotted in the area, as vehicles drove the "wrong way" on a slip road near junction 5.

Eye witnesses described a "massive" police presence with over a dozen police vans and cars at the scene. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service were also seen in the area as "huge tailbacks" could be seen.

According to Traffic Monitoring system Inrix, the M62 was closed in both directions and traffic was using the exit and entry slip roads to "get by". National Highways said normal traffic conditions are expected shortly after midnight as all lanes are currently closed.
