Tradie accused of headbutting unhappy customer in 'bizarre' attack

A tradie allegedly headbutted a customer and drove a ute at him during a dispute about building defects, in what a magistrate has described as a "bizarre" attack.

"I'm probably going to punch you in the face right now, c---," Geoffrey Lloyd Stephen Calvert allegedly said before attacking the other man.

Calvert, 33, from Aranda, faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, when he was denied bail.

He is yet to enter pleas to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated furious, reckless or dangerous driving, and burglary.

Police documents allege about 1pm on Saturday, Calvert met with the alleged victim at a home in Holt to discuss construction defects.

Text messages between the two men are said to include advice the alleged victim would be recording the meeting.

During this time, they walked through the home for about 45 minutes to view defects alleged to have occurred while Calvert was working at the property.

Calvert then left and walked to his Toyota HiLux ute, but soon returned and rang the doorbell to the front door.

He then asked the alleged victim if he had recorded the meeting, before threatening to hit him, the document states.

Calvert then allegedly headbutted the other man and punched him in the face multiple times.

The 33-year-old is accused of continuing to hit the man, knocking him to the floor and punching and kicking him.

The alleged victim yelled "settle down" and "relax Geoff" while trying to shield his face with his arms.

Calvert is accused of then grabbing the man's leg and dragging him through the entryway, leaving scuff marks on the walls, before leaving the home.

The alleged victim followed Calvert outside before the tradie got into his ute and accelerated towards him.

The front driver's side bull bar allegedly hit the customer's knee.

The alleged victim is said to have suffered a sprained thumb, bruising to his foot, cuts to his head and face, knee pain, as well as cuts and bruising to his back.

On Monday, prosecutor Mark Wadsworth opposed bail and labelled the accusations "a seemingly unprovoked, random attack".

"The interaction was significantly violent only over a building dispute," he said.

Legal Aid duty lawyer Eliza Wilson said Calvert had previously had his own business, but that had now failed.

She said he was now employed as a site manager and was seeking help with mental health.

Magistrate Glenn Theakston denied bail and said it was "unclear what triggered" the alleged attack.

"The offending is just bizarre, it suggests that [Calvert] is in a state of crisis and it is unclear what will happen next," Mr Theakston said.

Calvert is set to return to court at a later date.
