Trad session breaks out at church during Irish wedding in Cork and it looks like mighty craic

A video of a traditional Irish session breaking out at a church during a wedding ceremony in Cork is going viral online.

Abbey Ní Loinsigh and Stephen O'Dea got married in the Cathedral in Abbey's native Cobh last Saturday but the ceremony was a lively affair as almost 20 people burst into a trad session.

The couple, both teachers, are keen musicians themselves and asked guests to bring an instrument to the church on the day and almost 20 obliged, creating a fantastic atmosphere at the ceremony.

Speaking to PJ Coogan on the 96FM Opinion Line show, the couple admitted that they stole the idea from their friends who did something similar at their wedding a couple of weeks before.

"We were thinking why didn't we organise something like that. Then we realised how many people we would have at the church that can play, so we just made a Whatsapp group to say, 'if you've an instrument, come on, we're going to do these two tunes," Abbey told 96FM.

Those playing included both Abbey and Stephen's sisters, the bride's dad who was the first on the altar and a host of family and friends who the newlyweds thanked with Stephen calling them a "big bunch of legends."

The video of the impromptu session is now going viral online with people loving the sense of craic with the bride herself even joining in by playing the fiddle.

96FM presenter Coogan said he would love to see the ensemble play a full show as the bride quipped, "well, if you came to the Springfort Hall at three o'clock in the morning, you would have heard it alright! We had a great session."

The couple are now heading off to Donegal on their honeymoon but will be bringing their instruments as they are stopping off to play at another friend's wedding in Meath on the way home.
