Big Name Sports Figures, Leagues Support Zuck In Fight With Musk

The subculture of sports runs rampant on Twitter. But with Threads entering the fold, it will be interesting to see just how much the sports culture migrates -- if at all -- to Meta’s new text-based social media platform.

Though the platform is only a few days old and is limited to just mobile phone use, some sports outlets, athletes, and major news breakers have already made the switch and started posting cross-platform, but not all of the big names can be found on Threads yet.

Can sports fans trust that they can get on Threads and not be missing the latest sports news?

Here are some of the notable names in sports and their position on Threads as of Thursday, July 6.

Official Accounts of Sports Leagues

All of the sports accounts mentioned below have already started their Threads accounts, but their activity varies.

  • NFL - has yet to post anything amid a lull in the offseason.
  • NBA - first sports league account to hit a million followers, already posting about the NBA 2k24 Summer League that starts on Friday, July 7.
  • WNBA - posted for the first time on Thursday morning.
  • NHL - posted for the first time on Wednesday evening.
  • MLB - the most active sports league account on Threads among the pro leagues, which is no surprise given that its season is in full swing.
  • PGA Tour - posted for the first time on Thursday morning.
  • LPGA Tour - active given the US Open tees off on Thursday.
  • ATP Tour - active with Wimbledon ongoing.
  • WTA Tour - active with Wimbledon ongoing.
  • MLS - active, opening with a post highlighting Lionel Messi.
  • NWSL - its lone post came on Wednesday evening.

Some notable absentees include Formula One and the Premier League, though teams accounts like Mercedes-AMG Petronas and Manchester United are already active on Threads.

More Sports Business:

Big Name Athletes

The two most followed humans on Instagram are athletes in Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but neither have made their Instagram-linked Threads accounts yet. Neither has NBA megastar LeBron James.

A’ja Wilson of the WNBA and Max Homa of the PGA Tour -- two of the funniest and most active Twitter users in their respective sports -- have both yet to join Threads as well.

Here are some of the athletes who have:

  • Tom Brady
  • Patrick Mahomes
  • Giannis Antetokounmpo
  • Stephen Curry
  • Tiger Woods

News Breakers

Twitter was the hub for sports newsbreakers to drop news on the latest trades and signings, so it’s no surprise that many have been quick to jump on the new platform. But it remains to be seen if they’ll ever prioritize breaking their news on Threads instead of Twitter.

Here are some of the names:

  • Adrian Wojnarowski - NBA
  • Adam Schefter - NFL
  • Jeff Passan - NHL
  • Pete Thamel - College Sports
  • Shams Charania - NBA
  • Chris Haynes - NBA
