Tracking Hurricane Danielle as it 'strengthens' and could hit Ireland in days

Hurricane Danielle has strengthened over the weekend and now has its sights set on Europe.

The storm is the first hurricane of the season and is currently barrelling east over the Atlantic with any number of routes it could take.

Danielle is harmlessly spinning over the Central Atlantic and is nearly a thousand miles from the nearest landmass.

But depending on how the hurricane develops, it could have an impact on Ireland's weather as the week goes on.

Weather expert Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather currently says there is no need to worry but he is keeping a close eye as it develops.

The forecaster said: "The latest details on hurricane #Danielle show it turning Northeast and then possibly East towards Thursday as it weakens. That would keep it South of Ireland. Nothing to worry about but keeping an eye."

Hurricane or not, the country is in for a very mixed weekend with plenty of rain regardless and more warnings expected to be issued in the coming hours.

Speaking on the week ahead, a Met Eireann forecaster said: "Staying rather unsettled with rain or showers on most days along with some sunny spells."

Today, Monday, will be a wild day with clear spells turning to prolonged showers in places, the forecaster added: "After a rather calm start today it will become windy, especially in the southwest with some strong gusts expected. It will be a largely dry and sunny morning.

"However, cloud will build during the day and showery rain will gradually spread northwards over the country. There will be some heavy and thundery downpours bringing a possibility of some spot flooding. Highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty southeast winds."
