'Tracker' pinpoints stolen wallet at Redland school site but owner says staff and police won't help

A Bristol man claims his stolen wallet has been “stashed” on a Bristol school site. But despite alerting the school and the police, he says neither is taking his claims seriously.

George Crawford-Hunt, who until recently lived on Fernbank Road in Redland, believes his wallet, which was stolen from his car, has been hidden on the Redland Green School site after a “tracker” inside it notified him that it was just a 10-minute walk from his former home. But when he contacted the school to find out if it had been handed in he was told he could not enter the school grounds without a member of staff or a police officer.

He said: “I was then forced to contact the police, who I had already reported the initial break-in to and ask for their help. However, I was told that they were not interested and that it wasn’t worth their time. It’s just the frustration of knowing that my stolen property has been proven to be on the premises but the police and the school don't seem to care. It may not be a big issue to them to retrieve it but it’s personal to me.”

A spokesperson for Redland Green School said: “The school has been working with the police to support their investigation into the missing wallet, including daily searches of the school’s lost property as requested. It is right that the member of the public was told that he couldn’t enter on to the school grounds without a member of staff or the police to accompany him, as this is a standard safeguarding practice followed at all schools to ensure the safety of pupils and staff. The school is continuing to support the police in any way that it can, and this would of course include welcoming the police on to the school site if this was requested.”

Mr Hunt is still able to track his wallet which has not moved from the school grounds for over three weeks (George Crawford-Hunt)

Mr Crawford-Hunt told Bristol Live that his wallet has not moved since he began getting notifications about its whereabouts three weeks ago and is adamant that a “clear crime has been committed”. He claims the police and the school are being “hostile and reluctant to cooperate”. “They are shutting me out,” he added.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police said: “A man has reported that on Friday, October 7, his car was broken into, in Fernbank Road, and his wallet stolen. He has told officers that it contains a tracker, which has received a notification the tracker is in the vicinity of Redland Green School. Officers have made enquiries with the school and they have told police that no wallet matching the description provided by the victim has been handed in.”

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call 101 and provide the call handler with reference number 5222241352.
