Trabzonspor Punished For On-Field Clashes, To Play Games Without Fans

Trabzonspor, a top-tier football club in Turkey, has been handed a significant punishment by the Turkish Football Federation following violent clashes that erupted after a Superlig game against Fenerbahce. The federation has ordered Trabzonspor to play six matches without fans as a disciplinary measure. Additionally, the club has been fined over 3 million Turkish lira ($94,000) in connection with the incident.

The clashes occurred when Trabzonspor fans stormed the pitch after the match against Fenerbahce, which resulted in a 3-2 victory for the latter. Some Fenerbahce players were reportedly attacked by the home fans, leading to a chaotic and violent scene. Videos of the clashes quickly spread online, drawing widespread attention to the incident.

In response to the violence, Turkish police detained 12 individuals on March 17. Furthermore, two Fenerbahce players, Can Egribayat and Jayden Quinn Oosterwolde, have been handed one-match bans for their involvement in the altercation.

This incident comes in the wake of another violent episode in Turkish football, where the former president of Ankaragucu, another top-flight club, was arrested for physically assaulting a referee after a match. The Turkish Football Federation had to temporarily suspend league games in response to that incident, highlighting the growing concerns over violence in Turkish football.
