'Toxic!' - Manchester United fans' verdict as secrets behind forgettable campaign emerge

Manchester United brought the curtain down on a forgettable 2021/22 campaign on Sunday afternoon with a result that summed up their season, losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Former United winger Wilfried Zaha netted the only goal of the game to clinch a final day victory for Palace, inflicting a fourth defeat in six matches on United. It marked the end of a dismal spell in temporary charge for Ralf Rangnick, meaning United's supporters have now signed off for the summer with a sense of relief, knowing that their weekends won't be spoilt, certainly not for the next few weeks.

The defeat to Palace left United with their lowest points tally of the Premier League era, their worst defensive record since 1978/79 and staring at the reality of competing in the Europa League next season. It is hard to identify a single positive.

The campaign featured no shortage of dramas and dressing room leaks, while club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was given his marching orders. For those who cover the club on a regular basis, it's certainly been eventful.

However, matters on the pitch have been tough to watch, not just for the journalists who cover the club, but for those who pay their hard-earned money to support the players week in, week out. That means that players undermining senior staff, leaks coming out of the club at a rapid rate of knots and fraught meetings have not helped matters by any stretch of the imagination.

Following the conclusion of the campaign, MEN Sport's chief United writer, Samuel Luckhurst, has reflected on a season to forget, sharing a wealth of inside knowledge on what has contributed to such a forgettable period in the club's rich and colourful history. Unsurprisingly, such revelations have sparked a reaction from United fans. Below, MEN Sport has taken a look at what some of them have had to say.
