Townsville GP Praveen Kumar pleads not guilty to raping patient seven times

A woman has given evidence in a trial against a man charged with raping her after she went to see him for mental health treatment.

Praveen Kumar pleaded not guilty in the District Court in Townsville to seven counts of alleged rape between 2016 and 2017.

Crown prosecutor Tom Hancock told the court the alleged victim, a woman, had been seeking medical treatment for her mental health in 2014.

He said Mr Kumar was practising as a GP at My Family Doctors in Kirwan when the woman became his patient.

He said Mr Kumar was recommended to the woman by a friend.

He told the court Mr Kumar was sometimes violent.

The woman gave evidence to jurors in a closed courtroom in the presence of a support person.

Mr Kumar has had his bail extended for the duration of the trial.

The trial continues on Tuesday.
