Town named as 'home of the chavs' now crowned 'slobbiest place in Britain'

A UK town nicknamed “home of the chavs” has now been called "the slobbiest place in Britain".

Last year, two binmen were filmed brawling with the public in a fight, which led to one of the workers being knocked unconscious.

The two refuse collectors threw punches and yelled threats at shocked passers-by in Chatham, Kent.

Now, according to new research, the people of Chatham, Kent, are the least likely to cycle or walk.

The Medway town is famous for its inhabitants' love of Burberry clothes, tracksuits, baseball caps and "blingy" jewellery.

Chatham resident Adrian Richardson, 34, said: “We are a bunch of slobs.

“Wherever you go you see people with muffin tops and bingo wings, and it’s a rare sight indeed if you see someone jogging.”

Slobs such as television's Wayne and Waynetta - who are played by Harry Enfield and Kathy Burke - are also common in Doncaster, where the chatterbox Jeremy Clarkson was born.

It came second on the list with Scunthorpe in Lincs, Gillingham in Kent, and Lincoln not far behind, according to The Daily Star.

At the other end of the scale, folk in Southport, Merseyside, were rated the fittest.

The study looked at data from the walking and cycling charity Sustrans.

Financial experts at Forbes Advisor combined it with details about green spaces, gyms, leisure centres and cycling routes in each area.

A Forbes Advisor spokesman said: “Chatham is the worst location in the UK for exercise lovers.”

It scored just 14 out of 100 in the fitness index – the lowest of any towns or city.

Southport was rated an impressive 80 out of 100.

Kevin Pratt, of Forbes Advisor, said: “If you live in an area that has the spaces and facilities to enable you to get plenty of exercise, that’s something to celebrate.”
