Tourists continue to flock to Yorkshire's 'worst seaside town' as resort busier than ever

A seaside resort that was once named as the 'worst' in Yorkshire has been seeing an influx of tourists who are seemingly undeterred when it comes to picking a staycation destination.

Bridlington in Yorkshire has actually been seeing an increase in tourist numbers, with visitors still drawn in by the town's seafront promenade and sandy beach.

In fact, visitor numbers increased from 3.05m between June 2020 and May 2021 to 4.9m between June 2021 and May this year, reports YorkshireLive.

Bridlington recently came last out of all the Yorkshire seaside resorts in rankings from Which? magazine for 2022 - in fact, it was on the lower end of the scale in the overall UK rankings too.

On Tripadvisor, visitors seem to be torn about the local beaches, including Fraisthorpe Beach.

Although some holidaymakers have praised it for its sandy shores and handy facilities, others have complained about parking nearby, claiming they have been left with hefty charges.

Bridlington South Beach also has mixed reviews, with some people having enjoyed days out walking along the long stretches of sand or paddling in the shallow waters.

One family left a glowing review which read: "One of the cleanest, most tranquil beaches I have ever been to. The place is a must visit. The only drawback was the parking machines were only accepting coins, the app wouldn’t work, neither would card so we had a hard time finding someone who could give us coins to put in the slot. But there is ample parking, park and ride options and some spectacular views."

However, others have claimed that seagulls and animals left a lot of mess, which stopped them from having a great time.

Bridlington's Old Town also has mixed reviews, with some people arguing that it's run down, although most of the reviews we saw tended to be positive.

"Spent last weekend there for the forties weekend which was brilliant. The minster is beautiful. The old town is much nicer than the harbour area," wrote one holidaymaker, while another added that there was "a good mix of shops pubs and restaurants which all appear to be good".

For those looking for more ideas for UK holidays, a trip to Bamburgh could well be worth adding to your radar.

The seaside town was crowned the best for 2022 in Which's rankings, after its impressive scores on hotel prices, beaches, food and drink options, the seafront, tourist attractions, shopping, scenery, and value for money.

It's not surprising that the Northumberland town has proven so popular. It actually held the title in Which's 2021 rankings, and recently was revealed as having one of Europe's top 10 beaches.
