Tourist slams 'rip off' cliff visit in brutal Tripadvisor review - but is soon corrected

A spokesperson for Cliffs of Moher has come forward to defend the popular Irish attraction after a disappointed visitor blasted it as a "tourist trap".

One of the most beloved beauty spots in Ireland, the majestic Cliffs of Moher, along the dramatic coastline of County Clare, offers breathtaking views of the Aran Islands and Twelve Pins mountain ranges.

Every year, visitors will travel far and wide to visit the rugged cliffs, which regularly rank among the top tourist destinations in Ireland, but it would seem not everybody walks away struck with wonder.

As previously reported by the Irish Mirror, a visitor recently blasted the scenic cliffs in a harsh Tripadvisor review, declaring the £10.30 (€12) admission fee to be a "rip off".

The tourist in question, who had travelled all the way from Edinburgh, Scotland, left a 'poor' two-star review and didn't hold back in voicing their dissatisfaction.

According to this review, they visited back in May, taking to Tripadvisor shortly afterwards.

The visitor - who goes by the username icsics - wrote: "Unfortunately this is now a tourist trap. €12 per adult. Rip off charge. Not much to justify this price in the centre. Video was not working.

"Shame you feel you’ve been fleeced. Views spectacular you might be better off viewing from the ferry. Pity."

However, it wasn't long before a Cliffs of Moher spokesperson hit back, defending the widely photographed natural landmark in a response highlighting why it wasn't fair to describe the fee as a "rip off."

After thanking the disgruntled visitor for their review, the spokesperson said they were "sorry to read that you felt the admission charge is a rip-off."

They then went on to explain that "the Cliffs of Moher Experience is purpose-built as a safe viewing point along the Cliffs and to provide information and services to visitors as well as conservation of the area", with the entry fee covering a range of services.

Such services are said to include parking, safe viewing platforms and pathways, a visitor centre and exhibition, O’Brien’s Tower and rooftop viewing, shopping and food outlets, toilet facilities, and Wi-Fi, as well as the audio guide and app.

The spokesperson continued: "As well as this we have a team onsite to provide assistance such as visitor management, information, guided tours, wheelchairs, and mobility assistance for the less abled, first aid as required, site maintenance, litter picking, and conservation of the Cliffs of Moher site itself and the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark.

"We also offer other complimentary services such as Binoculars and Picnic Blankets on loan, water refill station, phone charging and luggage storage.

"There are no further charges for the services onsite after this admission charge unless of course visitors wish to purchase some souvenirs from the Retail Outlets or some food or drinks from our Food & Beverage Outlets. We also provide Picnic areas and an internal dining area for those who wish to bring their own snacks.

"We offer reduced rates for advance booking online and children under 12 years are free of charge when accompanied by an adult.
We hope this clarifies the admission charges at the Cliffs of Moher Experience. Best wishes from all the team."
