Explaining his absence, Postecoglou told Sky Sports before the game: “He [Maddison] is still a bit sore from the other night.
“It took a fair bit out of him and he was not 100 per cent, so he misses out.”
Asked if the injury is anything serious, Postecoglou said: “No we hope not. He should be alright for next week.”
Pape Sarr is fit and starts in midfield alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall.
Archie Gray starts at left-back after Djed Spence failed a late fitness test.
Spence has been ruled out and Gray starts ahead of Sergio Reguilon.
Yves Bissouma is on the bench.
Antonin Kinsky returns in goal, while Ben Davies will again partner Radu Dragusin in central defence following his return to fitness.
Gray has appeared in need of a rest and will have to play next Thursday against Elfsborg in the Europa League, but he starts with Spence sidelined.
Postecoglou is down to just four first-team forwards, including teenager Mikey Moore.
The 17-year-old made another lively cameo against Hoffenheim and is on the bench.
Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert also remain sidelined through injury.
