Tottenham Women midfielder Eveliina Summanen hit with two-game ban for simulation

Tottenham Women midfielder Eveliina Summanen has been banned for two matches for “successful deception of a match official” to get Manchester United’s Ella Toone sent off.

Lionesses star Toone was red-carded late in United’s 2-1 win at Spurs earlier this month after appearing to hit out at Summanen.

United manager Marc Skinner said he believed Summanen was “play-acting” and Toone had her red card overturned.

Summanen denied an FA charge for “successful deception of a match official” but an independent regulatory commission upheld it and the Finland midfielder has now been hit with a two-game suspension.

An FA statement said: “Tottenham Hotspur Women’s Eveliina Summanen has been suspended for two matches following their WSL match on February 12 against Manchester United Women.

“The midfielder denied a charge for ‘successful deception of a match official’, which allegedly took place during the 80th minute and led to an opponent being sent off, and amount to an improper charge.

“An independent regulatory commission upheld the charge during a subsequent hearing and imposed her two-match ban. Its written reasons will be published in due course.”
