Tottenham drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt in an entertaining, chaotic first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash on Thursday evening.
It was a sloppy start by Spurs as Frankfurt turned the ball over in midfield and star striker Ekitike sprinted away to slot in a beautiful finish by Vicario in just the sixth minute.
But Pedro Porro scored a brilliant equaliser from a James Maddison cutback, flicking in an inventive backheel just before the half-hour mark.
Visiting keeper Kaua Santos was the hero of the night, making multiple saves in the second half, with the Bundesliga side clinging on for a draw despite waves of Spurs pressure late on, while Frankfurt continued to threaten on the break in a frantic, end-to-end encounter.
With pressure mounting on manager Ange Postecoglou and Spurs enduring a difficult season in the Premier League, where they sit 14th with just seven matches left to play, the Europa League represents their last chance of silverware and although they will feel unlucky to be level going into the second leg in Germany next week, they will still feel a semi-final spot is within their grasp.

Kulusevski a possibility to play in second leg, Postecoglou says
22:33 , Flo Clifford“I thought Destiny [Udogie] was outsanding in terms of his running capacity. That’s the ability we have to kind of over-run teams, and that’s what we’re going to have to do in the second leg. I thought the guys that came on gave us some energy.
“The second leg’s going to be tight for sure, we’re going to need all the lads ready to go, and the good thing is we’ve got most of them back.”
He adds that Dejan Kulusevski is “touch and go” for the second leg. The Swede and Kevin Danso are due to return to team training by early next week.
“I don’t think they’re a possibility to start but Kulusevski’s a chance to be involved,” he adds.
'On any other night you’d go away with a comfortable victory'
22:26 , Flo Clifford“I had a feeling they’d play fairly conservatively,” Postecoglou continues. “Conceding so early played into their hands, I always felt that we’d finish strongly. We created so many chances in the second half, we hit the crossbar three times, I think.
“On any other night you’d go away with a comfortable victory. If we can repeat that performance I definitely think we’re giving ourselves a chance.
“Players know what’s at stake and everything has a little bit of an edge on it. I think it’ll be a cagey affair, it’ll come down to moments. If we repeat those moments next week one of those will fall to us and we’ll get what we need.”
Postecoglou: 'Disappointing to concede the way we did'
22:20 , Flo CliffordAnge Postecoglou has a chat with TNT Sports. He says: “I can’t ask anymore of the lads. It was disappointing obviously to concede the way we did. Even before that I thought we were well in control of the game, we didn’t create a lot in the first half but I thought we were making them work awfully hard which would bear fruit for us in the second. It did in every aspect but the goals.”
On the equaliser: “It was the kind of thing we’d worked on, getting people across the front of their defence. Dom’s done awfully well to hold it up, Madders is really good in the box in these situations, we’ve got Brennan at the far post, we’ve got guys in those areas all the time. It’s a great finish.”
Tottenham held by Eintracht Frankfurt but demonstrated a quality that could yet save their season
22:12 , Miguel DelaneyTottenham Hotspur may not have the lead in this Europa League quarter-final, but they do have a sense of life. They were much the better team against an awkward but uninspired Eintracht Frankfurt, in a 1-1 home draw that could have gone much worse.
Ange Postecoglou can tell his players they have the winning of this tie even in Frankfurt. He himself might say that would make a difference from the rest of the talk around Spurs of late. There’s a bit of hope, and spirit. They’re alive in a competition that can yet save the manager’s job and the season, when the campaign has seemed moribund.

Tottenham held by Eintracht but demonstrated quality that could save their season
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
21:59 , Flo CliffordThat was a frenetic, end-to-end game. Spurs will feel unlucky to come away with a draw, with Johnson missing a late chance to put them ahead and Santos making several crucial saves.
In the end it was two first-half goals that decided the game, with Ekitike’s lovely sixth-minute strike cancelled out by Pedro Porro’s backheel 20 minutes later. Still, a much brighter performance by the hosts than they’ve shown recently.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
21:36 , Flo Clifford79 mins: Changes for Spurs. Udogie’s race is run this evening and he, Son and Maddison all come off. Spence, Tel, and Sarr are on.
Maddison doesn’t look particularly thrilled to come off.

21:29 , Flo Clifford72 mins: Kristiansen goes into the book for just about tripping Udogie as he drives forward into the box, and he isn’t very happy about it. It does feel a fairly soft yellow. Free-kick to Spurs about 25 yards out.

First substitution of the game as Bahoya is replaced by Chaibi.
CHANCE! Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
21:22 , Flo Clifford65 mins: Ekitike produces another moment of magic, holding up the ball as Frankfurt press forward. Brown cuts it back at the byline and it falls to Bahoya but he wastes a chance volleying over the bar.
There was a foul on Son in the build-up so the crowd, and Postecoglou, wouldn’t have been too happy if that had gone in. The Tottenham manager shakes his head as another call for a free-kick goes begging after Johnson goes down.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
21:19 , Flo Clifford62 mins: A frantic passage of play as both sides repeatedly give the ball away and attempt to break, but turn the ball over before they can get away. Porro gets a reprieve for one such loose ball.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
21:17 , Flo Clifford59 mins: Spurs keep coming! Maddison takes a touch and jinks forward, shooting instead of crossing, with Santos getting his body in the way and saving with his thigh. Seconds later Udogie crosses in again but it’s headed away and the hosts win a corner.
Maddison gestures to the crowd to make even more noise. The atmosphere is electric.
Frankfurt turn over and break, with Kristensen sending in a dangerous low cross, but there’s no-one there to capitalise.
SAVE! Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
21:13 , Flo Clifford56 mins: Incredible save by Santos! Tottenham pile the pressure on, Son takes a powerful strike on the edge of the box but Santos gets a palm to it and tips over the bar.
Spurs take a corner but Bentancur’s leaping header also hits the crossbar and ricochets over!
CHANCE! Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
21:12 , Flo Clifford54 mins: Porro gives the ball away cheaply and Brown takes full advantage, sprinting away, and links up well with Ekitike as the striker darts down the left, but he misses his moment and Spurs flood into the box.
Now a HUGE chance for Spurs as Bergvall gets into space - but clatters it against the crossbar! Santos was beaten and it looked to be curling into the top corner, but drifted up just at the last moment!
CHANCE! Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
21:08 , Flo Clifford51 mins: Chaos in the Spurs box! Lovely intricate play by Frankfurt as they work the ball to Bahoya at the back post but he tries to find a teammate in a crammed box instead of shooting and Spurs eventually clear.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
21:04 , Flo Clifford47 mins: Bergvall plays in Johnson as the hosts look to start on the front foot but his sort-of backheel flick lands in the path of a Frankfurt defender.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt

SECOND HALF: Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
21:00 , Flo Clifford45 mins: The teams are heading back out now, the second half is moments away.
HALF-TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:50 , Flo CliffordThat break by Eintracht Frankfurt is the last action of the half, with the visitors still very much a threat in this tie. An entertaining and often frantic half with both sides full of confidence they can win it.
It’s one goal apiece going into the break, with Spurs much improving after they were caught napping in midfield in the opening minutes.
The visitors gained an early advantage through a glorious Ekitike strike, but a brilliant team goal helped the visitors draw level just before the half hour mark, with Maddison cutting it back for Porro and the right-back scoring with an inventive backheel.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:47 , Flo Clifford45 mins: Dangerous move by Frankfurt as the ball falls to Ekitike, who has the better of four Spurs shirts, but he runs out of steam and his attempt falls straight to Vicario.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:44 , Flo Clifford43 mins: Spurs are nearly caught out as Frankfurt push along the right sideline but Bentancur, who’s been in the right place at the right time tonight, covers.
Bit of a lull in play at the moment.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:41 , Flo Clifford40 mins: Frankfurt give Bergvall a wide berth, for some reason, as he cuts into the box and lays it off for Son. The captain tries to curl it into the back post but Santos leaps up to collect.
Now Maddison tries to chest down a long ball into the box but can’t control it and Skhiri nicks it to tee up a Frankfurt press. Porro gets absolutely launched into the air and lands with a thump after an aerial battle with Brown, and gets up with a grimace. He’s okay to continue.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:38 , Flo Clifford37 mins: Spurs turn the ball over but Maddison rushes a pass to Johnson. Postecoglou shouts at his side to keep their composure.
Frankfurt win a free-kick 25 yards out on the right. Gotze delivers but Bergvall heads away.

20:35 , Flo Clifford34 mins: Plenty of pinball in midfield as neither side can really keep hold of the ball. The energy is high but the pace is quite frantic.
Larsson tees up a move by Frankfurt but first Brown and then Ekitike find themselves surrounded.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:32 , Flo Clifford31 mins: The mood in the stadium - understandably - has massively lifted since Spurs drew level, as the fans urge them on. Son skies a free-kick over the bar, while down the other end Frankfurt can’t do anything with a free-kick of their own.
GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:28 , Flo Clifford25 mins: Spurs get the equaliser! Son curls it to Solanke down the left, who spins round and finds Maddison at the byline. He cuts it back to Porro, in the middle of the box, who scores with a cute backheel flick! A real team effort.
Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:24 , Flo Clifford23 mins: Porro is miffed that he hasn’t won a corner off Theate as they both scrap for the ball and it goes out.
Van de Ven slides in on his man and takes him out. Decent spell for Spurs. Tuta takes out Solanke in the box for a goal-kick; the crowd want a penalty but no dice.
CHANCE! Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:21 , Flo Clifford19 mins: So close to an equaliser! Solanke makes another great run and curls it to Johnson at the back post, but tips his header over the bar!
Spurs - mostly Solanke - have been pressing in the last few minutes, but are yet to get that final ball in.
Maddison has been guilty of a couple of rash challenges so far and gets a talking to from the ref for a high boot.
Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:17 , Flo Clifford15 mins: Solanke darts towards the near post as Spurs press forward, but slams the ball into Kristensen. Corner to the hosts.
Son takes but it’s headed away by Skhiri. Spurs recycle, can’t make the most of it as Santos boots it away, and it falls to Ekitike. He darts away and tries to cross to Brown as he runs down the left, but Porro is alive to the danger and clears.
Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:14 , Flo Clifford13 mins: Spurs are looking more threatening now as Son tries to tee up Solanke, but it’s an awkward angle for him and his header falls into Santos’ gloves.
Equally, Frankfurt’s pace and ability to dive into pockets of space is causing the hosts problems. Now Brown drives down the left, in acres of space, but he’s offside.
Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:11 , Flo Clifford10 mins: Brown takes a corner and Vicario comes out to snatch at it, danger averted. Frankfurt are continuing to press and Spurs need to ride this wave.
Porro launches a delightful long ball to Son, who sprints past Kristensen on the left, but his shot is straight at keeper Santos.
GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:07 , Flo Clifford5 mins: Frankfurt get the breakthrough! Incredibly sloppy from Spurs as Skhiri turns over the ball in midfield, robbing Maddison. Ekitike is left totally unmarked on the left and sprints forward, dancing past Porro, slotting it into the bottom right past a diving Vicario.
Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
20:04 , Flo Clifford3 mins: Spurs are a little sloppy in possession so far. Maddison catches Bahoya a tad late and concedes a free-kick.
Ekitike dances away with the ball but is closed down by the Spurs defence.
KICK OFF: Tottenham Hotspur vs Eintracht Frankfurt
20:01 , Flo CliffordWe’re underway in north London!
Minutes to go
20:00 , Flo CliffordThe players are out of the tunnel and it is LOUD in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Almost time for kick-off
19:56 , Flo CliffordNearly kick-off at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The visitors will have fond memories of this stage of the competition, which they went on to win in 2021-22. For Spurs, it’s been a long old wait for major silverware: they haven’t won in Europe since 1984.
Victory at home tonight would put them ever closer to the final in Bilbao and an end to their trophy drought...
Head-to-head
19:52 , Flo CliffordThis is the first meeting between these two sides in the Europa League. Spurs have won two of their four previous meetings, lost one and drawn two, with their previous meeting - a Champions League group stage clash in 2022 - a 3-2 aggregate victory for the north London side.
Who next?
19:45 , Flo CliffordThe winner of this tie will face the winner of Bodo/Glimt and Lazio, who are currently in action in action in the first leg of their quarter-final.
Bodo/Glimt are 2-0 up at the moment in that one.
Criticism of Spurs plays no part in bid for Europa League glory, Brennan Johnson says
19:40 , Flo Clifford“Personally, I just want to win it for the group of players and the staff,” Johnson said. “I don’t really care about what other people sing and the critics to be honest. I feel like I switched off from that a long time ago.
“I love the lads, all the players in the squad, all the staff, the management team. I feel like we’ve created a real tight-knit group.
“I feel like we’ve all been under a lot of criticism, maybe different people at different points, so it’s something that we can all kind of relate to. So, we all have that understanding with each other.
“When it comes to tournaments like this and being able to progress, it’s something that we just want to do for each other because at the end of the day, we’ve had some tough times and there’d be no better joy to celebrate with the people that have had to go through it like I have as well.”
Ange Postecoglou is in the Erik ten Hag death spiral
19:30 , Miguel DelaneyThe Independent’s Chief Football Writer Miguel Delaney had this to say on the topic...
At Tottenham Hotspur, there’s a familiar tone. Ange Postecoglou had attempted a call to arms as the club gets closer to a first trophy since 2008, but not even he could resist sparking discussion about his own immediate future.
A press conference that started with the Spurs manager talking about having to “make the most” of a Europa League quarter-final evolved into Postecoglou volunteering references to articles discussing whether he would go regardless, and even name-checking journalists. The generous interpretation of this is that it is classic siege mentality amid a difficult period for the team. Except, most of the difficulty has been around the manager’s performance.

Ange Postecoglou hits back at critics: ‘Everything Tottenham does is wrong’
19:20 , Flo CliffordAnge Postecoglou remains determined to navigate his latest struggle and lead Tottenham to Europa League success, but acknowledged the "general sentiment" is he will not be in charge next season.
Speculation over Postecoglou's future has been rife for months following a difficult winter where 14th-placed Spurs slid down the Premier League table amid a hefty list of injuries.
It has left the Europa League as Tottenham's only chance to salvage a difficult campaign and with Eintracht Frankfurt set to visit on Thursday in the quarter-final first leg, Postecoglou made reference to a national newspaper opinion piece which suggested even European glory may be too little, too late for him.

Team news and updates - Spurs
18:30 , Flo CliffordSpurs have no new injury concerns after the win over Southampton, though Kevin Danso and Dejan Kulusevski remain out until later this month.
Postecoglou now has a range of options in both midfield and attack, with Wilson Odobert, Heung-Min Son, Brenna Johnson and Mathys Tel fighting for a spot on the wing.
Though the back five tends to be fairly settled when all players are fit, Yves Bissouma, Pape Sarr, James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall will be competing for a starting berth in midfield.
Postecoglou on Frankfurt
18:20 , Mike JonesThe Spurs boss added: "It's going to be a tough game. Frankfurt are a good side and are going well in the Bundesliga.
“They got a mixture of exciting young players but also some experience in there.
“It will be a good challenge but when you get to the last eight of European competition, that's what you expect to face."
'We want to make the most of it'
18:10 , Mike JonesTottenham manager, Ange Postecoglou, said: "I am not sure how many times the club has been in the quarter-finals of a European competition.
“So every time you get in there, you cannot take it for granted and you want to make the most of it."

18:00 , Mike JonesThe Frankfurt coach said: "We're extremely excited about this game and it's an absolute highlight for all of us.

Eintracht Frankfurt put the pressure on Spurs
17:50 , Flo CliffordSpurs’ opponents today are having a better time of it, third in the Bundesliga, although 20 points off the pace of leaders Bayern Munich. They also have recent history in the Europa League, winning the tournament in 2022.
Manager Dino Toppmoller aimed to put the pressure on their hosts, saying: “We come up against the top favourites tomorrow in my opinion. I think Tottenham are the big favourites.
“At the beginning of the season, Spurs and Man United were clearly the top two favourites, but we have a first head-to-head against Tottenham and it’s something quite special. We’re certainly ready for it.”

Spurs’ bid for Europa League glory is not driven by criticism – Brennan Johnson
Spurs hoping for trophy to salvage their season
17:40 , Flo CliffordA European trophy would significantly improve what has been a poor season otherwise for Spurs. Injuries have played a significant factor in why they sit 14th in the top flight with only seven matches still to play, but even with plenty of their big names back the middling performances and general sense of malaise don’t seem to have gone anywhere.
But they won 3-1 last time out - admittedly not much of an achievement over the Premier League’s bottom side - to condemn Southampton to an early relegation and stop a run of back-to-back defeats.
Routes to the quarter-final
17:30 , Flo CliffordThe final standings of the league phase suggest this tie could be a close one. Eintracht Frankfurt finished just one point below Spurs in the table, with an equal number of wins - five - but two losses compared to Spurs’ one.
They hammered Ajax 6-2 on aggregate to progress to the last eight.
Routes to the quarter-final
17:20 , Flo CliffordSpurs have had an indifferent season in the Premier League but have fared much better in Europe, finishing fourth in the league phase with five wins from eight games.
Ange Postecoglou’s side beat AZ Alkmaar 3-2 on aggregate to reach the quarter-finals, although a first-leg defeat set up a nervy finish to that tie.
