Tottenham vs AZ Alkmaar - LIVE!
Tottenham delivered under huge pressure to beat AZ Alkmaar 3-1 and reach the Europa League quarter-finals. Ange Postecoglou’s side knew their season was on the line in north London, with this competition their last hope of ending the campaign in successful fashion.
After a 1-0 defeat in the first leg, Spurs levelled up the tie on aggregate before half-time here, as Wilson Odobert converted from Dominic Solanke’s pass for his first goal for the club. James Maddison then struck shortly after the break to give Spurs some level of control, but that was surrendered when Lucas Bergvall and Odobert made a mess of things at the back and Peer Koopmeiners took full advantage to smash home.
That raised the prospect of extra-time, but Odobert restored the lead in the tie with his second of the night, finishing at the back post after a brilliant team move, and that proved to be enough for a 3-2 aggregate win. Spurs will face Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals, after they thrashed Ajax 6-2 over two legs to progress.

21:55 , Matt VerriIt was nervy at the end but Spurs win to set up a Europa League quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt next month.
Winning keeps the season alive but the performance -- and particularly the winning goal -- should restore some confidence in Postecoglou's project.
It wasn't a perfect display but much improved.
FT: Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 3-2)
21:54 , Matt VerriThe goalkeeper is up too...
But Spurs survive!
That’s a huge win, through to the quarter-finals to face Eintracht Frankfurt.

Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 3-2)
21:53 , Matt Verri90+3 mins: Gray with a cynical foul, AZ free-kick in the Spurs half.
Up come the red shirts...
Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 3-2)
21:52 , Matt Verri90+2 mins: Spurs two minutes away from the quarter-finals.
Long ball forward, Romero nudges Parrott out the way and Porro cooly nods it back to Vicario.
Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 3-2)
21:49 , Matt Verri90 mins: AZ fans think they have an equaliser... side-netting!
Smit with the volley at the back post, wasn’t a convincing effort.
Four minutes added on.
Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 3-2)
21:47 , Matt Verri88 mins: Spurs dropping deeper and deeper.
Ball floated into the box from deep, superb goalkeeping from Vicario to charge off his line and claim, right on the edge of the area.
Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 3-2)
21:44 , Matt Verri85 mins: Ironic cheers from the Spurs fans as Vicario waves his team-mates up the pitch and smashes a goal-kick long.
Bergvall went down with cramp, so Davies is on to replace him. Gray into midfield.
Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 3-2)
21:42 , Matt Verri82 mins: Spurs are ridiculously vulnerable in defence right now.
Romero just watches the ball sail over his head, Meerdink heads over from six yards out!
Parrott was waiting behind, would have had an easier chance.
Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 3-2)
21:39 , Matt Verri79 mins: HUGE CHANCE!
Parrott clean through on goal, Vicario parries the shot into the path of De Wit... he can’t turn in the rebound!
Bissouma comes charging across to make the block.
Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 3-2)
21:37 , Matt Verri77 mins: Two Spurs changes.
Maddison and Odobert the two to make way, strong night for both of them.
Bissouma and Johnson are on.
Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
21:35 , Matt VerriBrilliant team goal and one of the best examples of Postecoglou's football we have seen for months.
If Spurs can hold on - and that remains a big if - this could be a night to both keep their season alive and restore confidence in the manager's project.
Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 3-2)
21:35 , Matt Verri76 mins: There was actually a flick from Solanke to send the ball into Odobert’s path. The winger just about stayed onside.
Spurs are straight back on the attack, almost a carbon copy as Spence gets in out wide.
Cut-back to Solanke, his shot is blocked.
GOAL! Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar | Wilson Odobert 74'
21:34 , Matt VerriGreat goal!
All came from Maddison turning out of trouble in his own half and then Spurs were away.
Son slides the pass through to Spence on the overlap, he plays it across the face of goal and Odobert is there at the back post for a simple finish.
Tottenham 2-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 2-2)
21:31 , Matt Verri72 mins: AZ are sensing they can cause this Spurs defence real problems now.
Happy to play it long and back themselves, especially now Van de Ven is off.
Tottenham 2-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 2-2)
21:28 , Matt Verri68 mins: Spurs look ragged at the back.
Smit now in on goal, but the chance goes as he shifts the ball back onto his right foot.
Anything could happen in these final 20 minutes. Chaotic feel to the match.
Tottenham 2-1 AZ Alkmaar (agg 2-2)
21:25 , Matt Verri66 mins: Corner for Spurs, Porro to take it.
It’s over everyone, though, and Son can only play it back to Spence as he keeps it in play.
All gone a bit flat for the hosts after the shock of that goal.
Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
21:24 , Matt VerriYou always sensed AZ would get a big chance and Koopmeiners has taken it suberly after a mix up between Bergvall and Odobert.
The two youngsters have both been excellent for the most part, so they are a little unfortunate to be the guilty parties.
The tie is level again at 2-2.
GOAL! Tottenham 2-1 AZ Alkmaar | Peer Koopmeiners 63'
21:23 , Matt VerriSon skips away from a couple of challenges, bundles his way through a third... not a fourth.
AND AT THE OTHER END AZ SCORE OUT OF NOTHING!
Spurs had cleared the danger, Gray had done well.
But Bergvall plays the ball against Odobert from point-blank range, it rolls into Koopmeiners’ path as he smashes a finish past Vicario.
Tottenham 2-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 2-1)
21:20 , Matt Verri60 mins: That’s the end of Van de Ven’s night.
Gray is on for the final 30 minutes... and potentially more than that if AZ can find a goal.
Tottenham 2-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 2-1)
21:17 , Matt Verri57 mins: Poku burns away from Spence, so quick as he moves into the Spurs away.
But Van de Ven sticks with him and times the challenge perfectly. Great defending.
From a AZ corner seconds later, Clasie drags an effort inches wide of the far post!
Tottenham 2-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 2-1)
21:13 , Matt Verri54 mins: It’s all Spurs. Solanke skips into the box, his low ball into the middle is charged down. Corner.
Porro whips it into the near post with pace, Sarr can’t get on the end of it.
Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
21:11 , Matt VerriExcellent team goal from Spurs to nudge them ahead in the tie.
Porro won possession impressively and the composure from Odobert, Son and ultimately Maddison was excellent.
AZ will feel they will get one big chance to get level again but the confidence is flooding back to Spurs, who look in the mood to do more damage now.
Tottenham 2-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 2-1)
21:11 , Matt Verri52 mins: Really, really poor from Son. Big moment.
Sarr slides him in on goal, Son can either shoot or square it, but takes a heavy touch straight out of play as he considers those options.
Tottenham 2-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 2-1)
21:09 , Matt Verri50 mins: Game has been really open since half-time.
Ball falls for Parrott in the box, but the door is slammed shut just as he looked to get a shot away.
Now Spurs are back on the attack, both sides have given up on defending.
Porro whips a cross in, comes to Son and he loses it as he tries to cut inside.
GOAL! Tottenham 2-0 AZ Alkmaar | James Maddison 48'
21:07 , Matt VerriBut now Spurs lead on aggregate!
They have space to attack into and take full advantage. Maddison finds Son in space on the left, he plays it back to Maddison, and the midfielder lashes a finish low into the back of the net.
Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
21:07 , Matt Verri47 mins: Dear me...
Ball played back to Vicario, he considers some sort of Cruyff turn, realises the striker hasn’t fallen for it... and so just stumbles backwards.
Eventually boots the ball out of play.
Back underway!
21:05 , Matt VerriUp and running in the second-half!
Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
20:59 , Matt VerriSpurs level in the tie after Odobert's well-taken goal. They've been sharp and much more Angeball-y than in recent weeks but not created many chances of note.
AZ will be happy to keep this up and take it to ET.
HT: Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
20:49 , Matt VerriTakes a flick off the top of the wall and behind for a corner.
That comes to nothing... and that’s half-time.
Odobert’s strike has got Spurs back on level terms in the tie.

Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
20:48 , Matt Verri45+1 mins: Porro bundled over, just outside the area.
It’s a great position for Maddison, who is having to shove Porro away. Son also comes across and tells the right-back to take a hike.
Maddison better do something with this now...
Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
20:47 , Matt Verri45 mins: Two minutes added on.
Son tries to pick out one of the three Spurs players in the box, but his curling cross is headed away.
Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
20:45 , Matt Verri43 mins: Spurs switch off at the back, really poor from Romero.
Ball bounces into the path of Buurmeester, completely free 20 yards out... but he drags the effort wide.
That was a decent chance.
Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
20:42 , Matt Verri40 mins: Sadiq is a better touch away from being in on goal.
He beats Porro, but the ball runs away from him and Vicario can rush off his line to claim.
Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
20:40 , Matt VerriNow the tie is level, AZ are being forced to be more adventurous. That comes with risk for Spurs, given their porous defence, but also offers opportunities -- underlined by Son's quick counter-attack just now.
On balance, a more open game should suit Postecoglou's side more but Spurs will need another goal to really force the visitors to come at them.
Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
20:38 , Matt Verri37 mins: Loads of space for Spurs on the counter, Son can drive all the way into the area.
Onto his left foot, shot is blocked. Ball rolls back to him, he lays it off to Bergvall and the midfielder curls an effort well over the bar.
Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
20:36 , Matt Verri34 mins: Porro shanks a clearance, chance for AZ to get back on the front foot.
But Spurs quickly get numbers back, AZ find themselves in their own half again seconds later.
Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
20:33 , Matt Verri31 mins: This time Spence wins it back legally and he can drive towards the AZ area.
Solanke is free in the middle, but the poked pass takes long and the defender can get across to cover.
Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
20:32 , Matt Verri30 mins: Spence thinks he’s won the ball back on the left, but he shoved Sadiq over to do so.
Big 15 minutes coming up before half-time. Momentum fully with Spurs now - need to take advantage.
Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
20:31 , Matt VerriSpurs level the tie with their first real chance of the night and Wilson Odobert's first goal for the club.
It was a great finish from the Frenchman but credit to Son and Solanke for making the goal.
The stadium is as loud as it has been since the Carabao Cup win over Liverpool here in January.
Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 1-1)
20:30 , Matt Verri28 mins: Maddison stays down after playing a pass out wide and Spurs decide to play at walking pace rather than kicking it out.
Maddison gets up... and then Spurs knock it out.
GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 AZ Alkmaar | Wilson Odobert 26'
20:28 , Matt VerriOut of nothing!
AZ have the chance to clear it, but take far too long and Son is across to charge down the clearance.
Solanke pounces on the loose pass, squares it for Odobert and his first-time finish is a confident one.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:27 , Matt Verri26 mins: AZ defenders are up for this one.
Ball is behind the big men, and it’s flicked away at the back post. Should have been a corner, goal-kick given... we’ll call that 1-1.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:26 , Matt Verri25 mins: Poku knocks the ball away from Romero, who has no interest in letting him past. Free-kick for AZ out wide.
Romero has already shown a few signs that he’s very pumped up. Maybe too pumped up...
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:24 , Matt Verri22 mins: Dangerous cross from Son, Owusu-Oduro is confident in coming off his line to clear the danger. And clear out a couple of Spurs players.
It’s got the home fans going again.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:22 , Matt Verri20 mins: Lovely move from AZ, until Parrott tries to pick out Poku and boots it out of play.
For all Spurs have made a better start here than in recent matches, you feel AZ will be pretty happy with how it’s gone so far.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:20 , Matt Verri18 mins: First corner of the match for Spurs.
Not a great delivery from Son, Bergvall does well at the near post to win another corner.
Or not - goal-kick given. Not entirely sure how the referee managed to come to that conclusion.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:19 , Matt Verri17 mins: Great challenge from Spence, sticks in a foot to stop Parrott breaking for the visitors.
And Romero loses his head at the AZ striker for appealing for a foul. Getting right in his face, shouting at Parrott.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:17 , Matt Verri15 mins: Scrappy couple of minutes, neither side able to keep hold of the ball. Lots of loose passes.
Encouraging sign for Spurs that PSV win it back in their own half and are happy to just lump the ball as far away as possible. Bit early for that.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:14 , Matt Verri13 mins: Odobert with his first chance to run with the ball.
Shifts it onto his right foot on the outside... and whips in a terrible cross.
Flies over everyone and out of play on the other side, Son unable to keep it in.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:13 , Matt Verri11 mins: Good work off the ball from Spurs.
They lose it in their own half, but Bergvall presses well and forces AZ into a mistake, passing it straight out of play.
Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
20:10 , Matt VerriSpurs already look sharper than at any point during the first leg and have avoided the shambolic start which has characterised so many of their recent matches.
AZ, though, will be happy to have kept the ball out of their penalty box so far.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:10 , Matt Verri8 mins: First spell of possession for AZ, as they start to settle.
Played into space down the line to Sadiq, but Van de Ven comes charging over. Ridiculously quick.
Strong as well, as he turns out of trouble and gets Spurs back on the front foot.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:07 , Matt Verri5 mins: Son tries a flick round the corner, with Solanke and Maddison both making the same run. It’s cut out.
Porro has space to whip in a cross - ball doesn’t leave the ground and dribbles into the air. Fair to say he didn’t connect with that.
Tottenham 0-0 AZ Alkmaar (agg 0-1)
20:05 , Matt Verri3 mins: Spurs seeing pretty much all of the ball in the early stages here.
As ever, though, hosts will be vulnerable on the counter, with how attacking their full-backs are.
KICK-OFF!
20:02 , Matt VerriWe’re up and running!
Europa League anthem ringing around the stadium.
Could really just bin that off, couldn’t we? Just another reminder that you’re not in the competition you want to be in.
Here we go!
19:55 , Matt VerriPlayers are starting to gather in the tunnel in north London.
Have to think Spurs will come out of the blocks fast and try and make something happen early.
Need to get on the front foot and ensure the crowd are right behind them.
Sluggish start, particularly if there’s an AZ goal... it could turn ugly.
Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
19:48 , Matt VerriCould be a defining night for Ange Postecoglou’s reign, particularly if Tottenham go out.
No pressure...
"Spurs have nothing left to play for if they go out.. this feels like an enormous night for the club."

Europa League bracket
19:40 , Matt VerriThe winner of this tie will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals.
The German side thrashed Ajax 6-2 on aggregate to progress, and sit fourth in the Bundesliga table.
Would be a tough test for Spurs... but they can’t think about that yet.

Vicario: Spurs players behind Postecoglou
19:22 , Matt VerriTottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario insists the players can handle the pressure of this Europa League last-16 decider and says the squad remains fully behind head coach Ange Postecoglou
The competition is Spurs' final chance of salvaging a disappointing campaign and finishing Postecoglou's second season with a trophy, but they trail 1-0 in the tie after a hugely underwhelming display in Alkmaar last week.
Vicario says the players are totally committed to the Australian's approach.
"Yes, I can say that his approach has been very, very committed since day one when he joined here," Vicario said.
"He delivered to us the same way to play the game because he truly believes in this. We can be successful in this way and we are fully behind him, fully trying to do the right things that he believes are working for us.
"We are very, very committed to doing that and we have proved that. When we are at 100 per cent here in the brain and very, very committed to that I think we proved and showed what we can do.
Vicario added: "We know exactly what the game means... we are very conscious of it, and we just want to win the game.”

Postecoglou unimpressed with question
19:13 , Matt VerriThis match is being billed as make or break for not just Tottenham's season but Postecoglou's entire project, but the Australian reacted frostily when asked at his pre-match press conference if his job was potentially on the line.
"There are not many professions in the world where you have to come in and answer questions like that is there?" he replied.
"No, there isn’t, but I am going to be polite and say we’re focused on winning the game tomorrow night and need to put in a better performance than we did last Thursday. Obviously that wasn’t anywhere near the standard we want to play.
"We did some good things at the weekend, did some not so good things, but we feel like if we can play with the intensity and tempo we played at the weekend, we’ll give ourselves a good chance to progress."
Ange Postecoglou didn't like that question... 😬#THFC pic.twitter.com/QGrDMyewK7

Postecoglou turns to experienced heads
19:05 , Matt VerriTottenham’s four-man leadership group of Heung-min Son, Cuti Romero, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario all start.
First time that has happened since October.
Micky van de Ven also fit to start, while Wilson Odobert gets the nod on the right wing.

First-leg highlights
18:38 , Matt VerriFind something else to do for the next few minutes, Spurs fans...
For those not in the Tottenham camp, here’s a recap of what happened in the first leg last week.
Not much good, from a Spurs perspective.
Season on the line
18:30 , Matt VerriThe tie is win or bust for Spurs' season and it is hard to imagine Ange Postecoglou's project continuing beyond the end of the campaign if they crash out to the Eredivisie club, who had not beaten English opposition in their 12 previous attempts before last week.
Postecoglou's side were remarkably meek in Holland, mustering a solitary shot on target (and it looked like a mishit cross from Wilson Odobert) and having Guglielmo Vicario to thank for a pair of excellent saves.
Postecoglou blamed the “mindset” of his players on the night, but on Wednesday he pointed to their lack of “intensity” and called for them to replicate the “tempo” of Sunday's 2-2 home draw with Bournemouth, which he felt was closer to his side's true level.
One problem for Postecoglou is that Spurs' lack of intensity could be blamed on their long injury-list during their bleak December and January but that is no longer the case and he can pick close to his best XI here - Dejan Kulusevski (foot) and perhaps Rodrigo Bentancur (suspended) aside.
Injuries are simply no longer a serious factor for Spurs (at least not one that anyone wants to hear about), so a lack of intensity for such a big game has to come down to the manager.

In the building!
18:22 , Matt VerriSpurs have arrived in north London, on what is the biggest night of their season.
Everything resting on this.
— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) March 13, 2025
Postecoglou defends trophy comments
18:13 , Matt VerriAnge Postecoglou says he stands by his comment about "always" winning a trophy in his second season and suggested his words have been twisted by his critics "for their own purposes".
Back in September, following Spurs' defeat to Arsenal in the north London derby, Postecoglou tetchily told a TV reporter: "I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second season. Nothing’s changed. I’ve said it now. I don’t say things unless I believe them."
The former Brisbane Roar, Australia, Yokohama F. Marinos and Celtic head coach has never failed to win silverware in this second year in a job but that record is under threat with Spurs.
Asked if he regretted the remark, Postecoglou said: "My view has always been when you’re asked a question you answer it.
"I wasn’t making anything up. I was asked a question, I answered that question.
"People have used it for their own purposes in suggesting I was making a bold claim but I wasn’t. I was stating a fact. If that doesn’t happen this year then I cannot say that anymore if I’m asked next year can I?
"What was I supposed to say? ‘I always win in the second year but, well I have in the past everywhere I’ve been, here it won’t happen’ Is that what people want to hear?
"I don’t have an issue with that. People can twist these things and use them. Maybe we will defy the odds and I do win something. You know what people will say? ‘Isn’t it great that he made such a bold claim.’”

Standard Sport prediction
18:02 , Matt VerriHardened Spurs supporters may be wary about confidently backing the team this season but they should surely have enough at home.
That’s not to do Alkmaar any disservice and they certainly deserve their lead but Spurs can hardly play worse than they did out in the Netherlands.
With key players finally back in action and having had some minutes under their belt, it would be a surprise not to see Spurs progress.
Tottenham to win, 3-1 (agg 3-2)
Tottenham team news
17:52 , Matt VerriTottenham should start both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero tonight.
With Kevin Danso missing with a hamstring injury and Radu Dragusin out for the season, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has little choice but to start the pair after Romero came through an hour against Bournemouth on Saturday before being replaced by Van de Ven.
Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended after being booked in the first leg, leaving Lucas Bergvall and Yves Bissouma competing to start at No6.
Bissouma was hooked at half-time in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, so may drop to the bench, while James Maddison is likely to come into the side.
Postecoglou also faces a tough choice in the front three. Dominic Solanke and Heung-min Son are certain starters but Brennan Johnson, Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert and Mikey Moore - who was outstanding against AZ in the initial phase back in October - could all start on the right.
Predicted Tottenham XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence; Bergvall, Sarr, Maddison; Odobert, Son, Solanke
