Tottenham vs Arsenal: Who wins Champions League race with North London Derby looming?

With just over a month of the 2021/22 season left, both Tottenham and Arsenal still have a chance to secure Champions League football for next season. Spurs have six games remaining and their north London rivals have seven, with Mikel Arteta's side playing their game in hand on Wednesday.

Both sides have struggled with some inconsistent form in recent games, with the Lilywhites losing 1-0 to Brighton just hours before Arsenal suffered a defeat against Southampton. The two sides have some more favourable looking fixtures and some tough games, but who can secure the most points and finish in that fourth spot?

Tottenham are currently occupying fourth, with 57 points but Arsenal are just three points and two places behind, with 54. We asked Arsenal writer Tom Canton and Spurs writer Emma de Duve to predict the fixtures between now and the end of the campaign to see who would come out on top...take a look at their thoughts.

Chelsea vs Arsenal

Having lost to Crystal Palace, Brighton and Southampton, expecting anything from the trip to Chelsea would be reach considering their good form of late too. That said, despite predicting a defeat, the Gunners could surprise everyone, but it looks doubtful. ARSENAL DEFEAT

TOTTENHAM 57 POINTS
ARSENAL 54 POINTS

Arsenal vs Manchester United

Arsenal have had Manchester United to thank for their poor performances to keep them in the top four race. Although an emboldened side with travel to the Emirates knowing that a win could put them in the driving seat for top four, I feel the Gunners will find some strength and overcome their rivals. ARSENAL WIN

Brentford vs Tottenham

It's not going to be an easy game on Saturday. Not only is the fixture away, but the Bees have only recently beaten both West Ham and Chelsea. However, Tottenham need to bounce back after the Brighton defeat and I'm hoping they'll be able to do just that and secure three points at the Brentford Community Stadium. SPURS WIN

TOTTENHAM 60 POINTS
ARSENAL 57 POINTS

Tottenham vs Leicester

Tottenham battled hard at the King Power Stadium earlier this season and secured three points with the stoppage-time equaliser and winner. Even though the game is at home and Leicester have to play the fixture either side of their Europa Conference League semi-final games, something tells me Spurs might slip up. SPURS DRAW

West Ham vs Arsenal

Had West Ham not progressed through to the Europa League semi-finals I would have predicted a defeat here. However, considering the Hammers will play Frankfurt the Thursday before facing Arsenal, the Gunners should have enough to win. West Ham have been poor in the games following their Europa endeavours. At least this is how I am justifying the chance of a victory. ARSENAL WIN

TOTTENHAM 61 POINTS
ARSENAL 60 POINTS

Liverpool vs Tottenham

The trip to Anfield is never easy and I think it would be ambitious to expect much from the game, especially with Liverpool's quality this season. Tottenham could surprise everyone, just like they've done against Man City twice this season, but I'm not holding out much hope. SPURS DEFEAT

Arsenal vs Leeds United

With some momentum, the home match against Leeds can hopefully be with their opponents then safe from relegation. Even so, the need for points will leave them open and the Gunners can hopefully get a result comfortably in this one. ARSENAL WIN

ARSENAL 63 POINTS
TOTTENHAM 61 POINTS

Tottenham vs Arsenal

The big one. For me, the difference between Arsenal and Spurs has been separated by our north London rivals' access to two world-class players in Harry Kane and Heung-min Son. Without two of our top players in Kieran Tierney and Thomas Partey and having decided not to strengthen in January, Spurs’ team should win this game. And I reluctantly expect them too and end any top-four hopes. It is painful to say, but it is the reality.

What a game this one could be. The North London Derby at the Emirates earlier in the season was such a poor performance from Tottenham and whatever the result, they need to come out fighting. With that said, it will be a game Antonio Conte and the Spurs side can really show how far they've come this season and I think (and hope) they might secure three points. SPURS WIN

TOTTENHAM 64 POINTS
ARSENAL 63 POINTS

Tottenham vs Burnley

Another game that Spurs need to make sure they don't go into expecting to win. Burnley may have only won four games this season but they could still be battling relegation at this point and games against them this season have proven more difficult than some would expect. Saying that, I would hope Tottenham could go into the game on the back of a North London Derby win and get a good result from their last home game of the season. SPURS WIN

Newcastle vs Arsenal

Off the back of the defeat and with there much narrative surrounding Bruno Guimaraes it would then be very ‘Arsenal’ to lose at the Magpies. Newcastle have won their last five home games on the spin and St James’ Park has become a cauldron of noise again and a very difficult place to go. I think we’ll lose this and end the season with a dead rubber. ARSENAL DEFEAT

TOTTENHAM 67 POINTS
ARSENAL 63 POINTS

Norwich vs Tottenham

Final game of the season and it looks more and more likely to be against a team that will be relegated. Saying that, Tottenham will still need to travel Carrow Road and put on a solid final performance, to make it two wins in two against Norwich this season and I think they'll do it. SPURS WIN

Arsenal vs Everton

And with all Arsenal dead rubbers, we tend to comfortably win them. Be it Burnley or Huddersfield, Arsenal have often hit three, four or five on the final day with no pressure on the result. It is the irony of Arsenal and a painful one at that. A season of promise could likely end with it thankfully being over. It gives me no pleasure saying that and I sincerely hope I am wrong. ARSENAL WIN

TOTTENHAM 70 POINTS
ARSENAL 66 POINTS

So a switch in position in the Premier League table ahead of the North London Derby but then Tottenham overtake once again and seem to carry that through until the end of the season. That's what our Arsenal and Spurs writers think, do you agree? Have your say in the comments below.
