Tottenham turn to ex-Leeds United man in effort to cut gap on Man City and Liverpool

Antonio Conte looks set to appoint former Leeds United coach Gianni Vio to his Tottenham Hotspur coaching staff. Vio is regarded as a set-piece expert and, according to Football London, Conte is keen to get him on board in north London in a bid to improve Spurs’ threat from dead ball situations, having seen his side struggle in recent times.

Vio was the man in charge of Italy’s set-pieces at Euro 2020 and he is credited with playing a huge role as they went on to win the tournament at Wembley. However, the 69-year-old also spent time in the Leeds' ranks after being brought in to work with Thomas Christiansen during the 2017-18 Championship season.

He was hailed as one of the best in the world at the time of his appointment after the work he had done at Brentford, transforming the west London outfit into one of the most dangerous teams around at set-pieces. However, the Whites ultimately flattered to deceive in similar positions during his time at Elland Road.

After five months in the job only four sides had scored fewer goals from set-pieces than Leeds. He would eventually leave the club in June 2018 alongside Paul Heckingbottom with United opting not to renew his contract.

The Italian is a former Venice banker, who was brought into the game by ex-Palermo and Wolves chief Walter Zenga and he has reportedly designed 4,830 different routines. Conte will undoubtedly be keen to make use of those as he bids to close the gap between Spurs and those at the top of the table, Man City and Liverpool.

Vio has also spent time working with AC Milan, SPAL and Catania.
