Tottenham transfer news: Sergio Reguilon 'back-up identified' as Real Madrid consider return

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for Real Madrid to exercise their buy-back clause in Sergio Reguilon’s contract this summer and have identified Genoa’s Andrea Cambiaso as a potential replacement, according to a report.

Long-serving left back Marcelo is set to end his 15-year-stay in Madrid at the end of the season upon the expiry of his contract, and after inserting a £34m buy-back-clause for Reguilon following his move to north London in 2020, Real are considering an activation this summer.

And in preparation for this, Spurs have reportedly added Cambiaso to their wish-list, according to Alfredo Pedulla.

A new left-back is a priority at the Santiago Bernabeu and an easy option for the club would be to return to one of their former players in the form of Reguilon, while the opportunity of returning to his homeland and having a second chance with Madrid would be hard to turn down for the Spaniard.

However, that move is dependent on whether Los Blancos feel as though the 25-year-old has done enough at Spurs to justify taking a second punt on him, and whether it is worth paying £34m for someone who has fallen behind Ryan Sessegnon in the pecking order of late.

Reguilon made 36 appearances in all competitions during his first campaign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2020-21, performing fairly consistently and making an initial good impression under Jose Mourinho.

However, injuries have impacted his progression this term, while he has had to compete with Sessegnon in Antonio Conte’s new wing-back system. Nonetheless, he has still featured 29 times and also scored his first two goals for the club.

Either way, Spurs aren’t waiting around for Madrid to make a decision and have begun drawing up a shortlist of names who could come in as the club’s new left wing back next season, and Cambiaso is one of the top few.

The 22-year-old has spent the majority of his career playing outside Italy’s top flight on loan from his parent club, until he made his breakthrough into the first team this campaign and experienced his debut season in Serie A.

The Italy U21 international has made just 12 league appearances this season but has scored once and assisted a further four times during those games, heavily impressing as an attack-minded left back.

But despite his limited experience at the top level, the club already rate him at around £12 million, and his versatility and ability to use both feet means that he can slot in on either side of defence if required.

Spurs would certainly be taking a big chance on a player with less than a season’s worth of top flight football experience, playing for a side who are desperately trying to avoid relegation to Serie B, but Fabio Paratici knows the player well and he could be one for the future.
