Tottenham transfer news: Louis van Gaal calls on Steven Bergwijn to join Ajax ‘as soon as possible’

Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has called on Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn to join Ajax “as soon as possible.”

The forward has frequently spoken of his desire to leave Spurs and once again publicly asked to leave the club after a lack of first-team football.

Bergwijn continues to impress for the Dutch national side, however, and scored his fourth goal in as many games this year during their 4-1 Nations League win over Belgium.

Ajax made an offer for the former PSV forward in January but saw it rejected as Antonio Conte wanted to keep the 24-year-old in north London.

Still, Dejan Kulusevki’s arrival had already increased competition for places in the Tottenham attack and the signing of Ivan Perisic offers Conte another option going forward, making it difficult to see where Bergwijn fits in.

Eager to see one of his key players leave ahead of the 2022 World Cup, van Gaal said (via Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf): “If it’s up to me, Steven Bergwijn may join Ajax as soon as possible.”
