Tottenham told Harry Winks could leave amid 'excellent' Rodrigo Bentancur transfer

Harry Winks could leave Tottenham in the summer after slipping down the pecking order according to former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson. The 26-year-old has struggled for minutes this season, featuring in just 15 of Spurs’ 31 Premier League matches.

Winks started the campaign behind the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp, and their partnership in central midfield started to flourish once Antonio Conte took charge in November. Skipp in particular has been a favourite of the Italian and football.london understands he is in line for a bumper new contract, despite his protracted injury problems.

Spurs further strengthened in central midfield with the January acquisition of Rodrigo Bentancur, and the Uruguayan has formed a formidable partnership with Hojbjerg. Both players have played a key role in the Lilywhites’ recent resurgence that has seen them win their last four games in a row, to put them in pole position to secure a top four finish.

However, after Bentancur's arrival Winks looks like he will now be essentially fourth choice once Skipp returns to full fitness. And Robinson believes that it would be best for him to move on this summer in order to rejuvenate his career.

"Hojbjerg and Bentancur are the preferred partnership," Robinson told Football Insider. "You always worry about players adapting when they come to the Premier League but Bentancur has settled in brilliantly. He’s been excellent signing.

"He demands a starting spot every week. It is him plus one and at the moment it is Hojbjerg. Winks has found it hard to get into the team. It looks like the time has come for him to move on.

"He needs to be playing every week given the stage he is at in his career. He needs a manager who will show him a bit of love and play him every week.

"Hojbjerg and Bentancur are the first choice right now. Hojbjerg has not been consistent this season but he is playing really well at the moment. Bentancur is the one setting the bar."
