Tottenham to release Tanguy Ndombele on free transfer

Tottenham are set to release club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele on a free transfer this summer.

The midfielder has not played for Spurs since January 2022 but has won two league titles in as many seasons following loan spells with both Napoli and Galatasaray.

Ndombele signed for Spurs in the summer of 2019 following a £55m move from Lyon but managed only 91 appearances after falling out with a number of managers.

Antonio Conte briefly restored the 27-year-old to the first-team lineup during his tenure but the experiment ended sourly after the Frenchman stormed down the tunnel after being substituted during an FA Cup clash with Morecambe to audible boos from sections of the Spurs support.

Ndombele still had a year to run on his contract but will depart on a free transfer, bringing an end to an underwhelming period with the club.

Earlier this week, Spurs confirmed Ryan Sessegnon would leave the club upon the expiration of his contract, along with Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic and Japhet Tanganga.

Dier and Perisic will now complete permanent moves to Bayern Munich and Hadjuk Split respectively, while Millwall are pushing hard to sign Tanganga on a permanent basis after a loan spell last season.

The club did have the option to extend Sessegnon’s deal by another 12 months but opted against it.

“We thank Eric, Ivan, Ryan and Japhet for their service to the club and wish them all the very best for the future,” Tottenham said.

Chris Davies, who acted as Ange Postecoglou’s assistant manager last season, has also left the club to take the head coach’s job at League One club Birmingham.

Spurs are also believed to have kept tabs on former academy players Marcus Edwards and Kyle Walker-Peters of Sporting CP and Southampton respectively amid a balancing act with UEFA rules ahead of their participation in next season’s Europa League.

They state clubs must include four ‘club-trained’ players – who were on their books for three seasons between the ages of 15 and 21 – in their 25-man European squads.

After Tanganga’s departure, Spurs currently have only four eligible players in the squad: goalkeepers Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman; Oliver Skipp; and Troy Parrott.
