Tottenham to exploit Man City transfer mistake as talks begin for dream Antonio Conte signing

Tottenham could be set to take advantage of a potential transfer mistake by rivals Manchester City in the January transfer window. It comes as the Lilywhites look to strengthen the squad after a difficult run of recent form in the Premier League, with their goal being a top four finish.

The side started their season off well, but have since fallen off the pace slightly, now sitting fifth and five points behind Manchester United. Manager Antonio Conte has since called last season's fourth-placed finish a "miracle" and has claimed he is on board with the current project.

"Now I am really committed for this club and for Tottenham," the Italian told reporters. "Then there is this project and I signed a contract with this club and I have to accept this project to try to build with the club and to help the club in this project. Then you know during this process it can happen 1,000 things. The club can sack the manager or there are different visions, different situations."

While the summer window was geared towards signing depth options for the busy fixture schedule, January could look at signing those that will bring quality and a better fit for Conte's style. On top of that list will likely be a wing-back, given the dependence on them in his system.

The right flank has been the area of most concern but it appears as though work is being done to address that as the Daily Mail reports that talks are set to be tabled with Sporting CP over a move for Pedro Porro. The 23-year-old has impressed since playing in Portugal and has been touted for a big future.

Manchester City let the Spaniard leave the club for just £7.2million in the summer after a season-long loan, though his contract at Sporting now includes a £40million release clause. While Spurs could trigger that right away to skip negotiations, they could look for a different payment structure or terms by holding talks instead.

The 23-year-old could be the start of a host of signings that would fit Conte's style perfectly and get the side moving closer towards the top four.
