Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.
Bentancur was forced off during Spurs' humbling 4-1 defeat at struggling Leicester on Saturday. The Uruguayan was able to walk from the field but Standard Sport understands he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and has been sidelined until August at the earliest.
It is the second significant injury sustained by a Spurs midfielder in as many days after Yves Bissouma was forced to undergo surgery on a stress fracture to his left ankle. No timescale has been given on Bissouma’s return.
Pape Matar Sarr replaced Bentancur at the King Power Stadium and is expected to start the first leg of Spurs' Champions League last-16 tie against Milan on Tuesday. Oliver Skipp should also be drafted in, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg suspended. Sarr has never played in the Champions League and with just one Premier League start under his belt.
Bentancur has regularly impressed since joining Spurs a little over a year ago and is another blow to the club's top-four hopes. Last week captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was ruled out for at least five weeks with a knee injury.
