Tottenham star linked with top European clubs as Antonio Conte has £34m conundrum

Tottenham full-back Sergio Reguilon has been linked with a move to Barcelona, according to reports, as well as a number of top clubs monitoring a potential move. The 25-year-old has been at the club since 2020, joining from Real Madrid for roughly £27million.

The Spain international is most comfortable playing as a full-back, becoming a regular under Jose Mourinho last season. This campaign has been tougher for Reguilon, who has had to adapt to a position at wing-back under Antonio Conte.

The Italian prefers to play with a back three, asking his wing-backs to become creators in their own right by providing width up and down the pitch. In this role, the Spaniard has struggled, though he isn’t the only one, and has often been vying for the starting shirt with Ryan Sessegnon.

Sessegnon, 21, had become the preferred choice for a number of recent weeks, though an injury has sidelined him for a period where he began to find some form. It means a return for Reguilon, though it remains to be seen just how much faith Conte has in him.

That will be tested in the summer, with Spurs set for a huge transfer window ahead, where Conte has repeatedly asked the club to match his vision to continue their partnership. Speaking earlier this week, he said: “Honestly I have my vision and the vision is this, it does not change. The vision was the same in the past, the vision is the same in the present, the vision will be the same in future. My vision it will be this. I stop if the vision of someone is not the same.”

One decision that could be made is over the wing-backs, with potential incomings and outgoings ahead. Reguilon could be one of those involved in the decision making, with reported transfer interest.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano says that Barcelona are monitoring the left-back for the summer, in need of their own left-sided full-back, but they aren’t alone as a number of clubs are also eyeing a move. There is also the factor of Real Madrid, his previous club, which holds a €40million (£34million) buy-back clause in his contract.

It leaves things up in the air as they stand, with the vision of Conte and the ambition of the board likely to shape how the summer unfolds.
