Tottenham player ratings vs Motherwell: Doherty double, Kulusevski great as Spence and Gil shine

Brandon Austin

Made one comfortable save before almost seeing a clearance rebound into his own net off Shields. Replaced by Whiteman early in the second half. 6

Japhet Tanganga

Didn't have too much to do but helped Spurs keep the visitors out at the back, starting on the right of the back three before switching to the left in the second half. 7

Davinson Sanchez

The experienced head in the back line and he marshalled much of the play when it came his way. Lost the ball once in the second half with a bit of loose control. 7

Charlie Sayers

Played a couple of well measured crossfield passes to Spence early in the game and made a good interception 37 minutes in to stop a Motherwell attack. Had a shot blocked from the edge of the Motherwell box in the second half. A very composed performance from the 18-year-old defender before he was replaced midway through the second half. 8

Djed Spence

Showed some lovely footwork in getting high up down the right-hand side and put in a couple of dangerous early crosses. Linked up well with Kulusevski on a few occasions and the Swede sent him clear midway through the half only for the goalkeeper to deny him. He teed up Kulusevski for a chance before the half hour mark and sent a header across the box that White couldn't quite reach. In the 67th minute he flashed a low cross across the face of the Motherwell goal. This was an eye-catching performance from the 22-year-old. 8

Yves Bissouma

A very bright half from the Mali international with some pinpoint passing and quick feet on the ball. Played his part in Spurs' second goal with a well-weighted ball to Kulusevski and then touching on the return pass to Gil. Teed up White for an opportunity early in the second half. 8

Oliver Skipp

Kept the ball ticking over in the middle and was a tough presence whenever Motherwell got possession, ensuring they didn't have it for long. 7

Matt Doherty

Over on the left in Sessegnon and Perisic's absence. Picked out Spence with a pinpoint deep cross early in the half before getting on the scoresheet with a low shot after cutting inside from the touchline. He was put through again by Kulusevski in the second half but curled his effort wide from the edge of the box. Switched to the right of the back three after Sayers' exit and headed home a second goal from a Kulusevski corner. 9

Dejan Kulusevski

Looked sharp from the off and had a goal just two minutes in when he picked up a loose ball and fired in a low shot past the goalkeeper. He covered plenty of ground and put Spence through for a big chance between Spurs' first two goals in the first half. He was also involved in the build-up to Doherty's goal before teeing up Gil for Tottenham's third goal before the break. He then curled a pass into the path of Doherty for a second half chance before delivering the corner the Irishman scored from. A goal and two assists from the excellent Swede. 9

Harvey White

Played as a false nine and worked hard in both halves. He played a terrific first-time curling pass into the path of Kulusevski to set up Gil for Spurs' third goal. He then had a couple of efforts early in the second half, sending one at the keeper and one high and wide. Deserved a goal for his efforts. 8

Bryan Gil

A busy presence and was involved in all three first half goals. His pressing forced the loose pass for Kulusevski's opening goal. He then played in Doherty for the second goal and had a curling shot from the edge of the box tipped over by the Motherwell keeper. He then got a deserved goal himself when he fired home from Kulusevski's pull back before the break. Was involved in creating further chances for team-mates in the second half. 8

Subs

Alfie Whiteman

Back from his loan with Degefors in Sweden and he replaced Austin early in the second half. Made a good low save on 71 minutes and was a clear voice to the younger players late on. 7

Romaine Mundle

Replaced Sayers after the hour mark but in the left wing-back role. Put in a great cross for Lankshear in the final 10 minutes. 6

The mass of late changes

Will Lanskshear, Alfie Devine, Yago Santiago, Maksim Paskotsi, Malachi Fagan-Walcott, Alfie Dorrington, Nile John, Jamie Donley and Marques Muir all came on for the final 15 minutes. Not too much happened in those scrappy final 15 minutes but the defence did maintain Spurs' clean sheet while Lankshear had a good chance with a header that was cleared before it reached the goal line.
