Tottenham player ratings vs Brentford: James Maddison shines in win with Brennan Johnson brilliant again

Tottenham got back to winning ways in the Premier League as they prevailed 3-1 at home to Brentford.

After a nightmarish start in which Bryan Mbeumo gave the Bees the lead after just 22 seconds, Spurs recovered quickly and equalised on eight minutes as Dominic Solanke netted his first since his £65million move from Bournemouth last month.

It took Tottenham 20 minutes after that before they found the net again, with Brennan Johnson firing into the corner of the net from an acute angle.

James Maddison wrapped up the points late on, scoring decisively past Mark Flekken.

Dom Smith was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to rate the Spurs players’ performances…

Guglielmo Vicario 7

Could do nothing about Mbeumo’s unerring opener, but was then tackled by Fabio Carvalho when he bizarrely held on to the ball way too long. Fortunate to get away with handling the ball outside the box, before making amends with outstanding stops to deny Mbeumo and Kevin Schade.

Pedro Porro 6

Got nowhere near to Keane Lewis-Potter’s cross for the opening goal, but then raised his game and produced a typically energetic display.

Cristian Romero 6

Won a few key defensive aerial challenges. Otherwise went about his business well enough.

Micky van de Ven 5

Lost the ball a few times and was booked - though perhaps a tad harshly. But took up some good attacking positions.

Destiny Udogie 7

A nice burst of pace in the first half almost brought a clear sight of goal. Offered plenty of movement off the ball.

Rodrigo Bentancur 7

Although other players in white were more noticeable, Bentancur did an important job, disrupting Brentford’s rhythm.

Dejan Kulusevski 6

Missed a couple of pretty presentable chances, but his performance improved after the break and his ball-carries aided his side’s progression up the pitch.

James Maddison 9

An excellent display from a player who needed one. Both of the first two Spurs goals came after the Englishman had pinched the ball. Then made all three points secure by netting the third. Lively throughout.

Brennan Johnson 8

Brilliant display from Tottenham’s match-winner in midweek. Scored a superb first-half goal and came close twice more.

Dominic Solanke 8

Held the ball up well, dropped into midfield nicely, and got off the mark for his new club with a tidy first-half finish.

Son Heung-min 7

An afternoon when others came to the fore in attack, yet still picked up two assists.

Subs:

Yves Bissouma (Bentancur, 63’) 6

Offered a fresh outlet in midfield and sought to venture forward. His first minutes since before the international break.

Pape Matar Sarr (Johnson, 70’) 5

Came on to sure up midfield and did that.

Mikey Moore (Solanke, 88’) N/A

Archie Gray (Porro, 88’) N/A

Lucas Bergvall (Maddison, 88’) N/A

Not used: Forster, Dragusin, Werner, Spence
