Tottenham player ratings vs Aston Villa: Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris punished for errors in drab defeat

Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane made costly errors as Tottenham slipped to a 2-0 Premier League home loss to Aston Villa.

Emiliano Buendia and Douglas Luiz condemned Spurs to their fifth league loss of the season, with Villa’s ex-Arsenal boss Unai Emery extended his unbeaten managerial run against Spurs to four matches.

Here, Nick Purewal rates the Spurs performances...

Hugo Lloris - 4

Major mistake in spilling Douglas Luiz’s speculative long-range effort gifted Villa their opening goal.

Cristian Romero - 6

A promising enough showing from the returning World Cup hero, albeit in frustrating circumstances.

Clement Lenglet - 6

Another solid turn this time more centrally, pushed to add attacking impetus too.

Ben Davies - 5

Had the tougher time of Spurs’ central three but still battled hard.

Matt Doherty - 6

Conjured a stunning first-half nutmeg on Tyrone Mings and a fine recovery tackle after the break.

Yves Bissouma - 5

Saw a lot of the ball but was unable to make that count.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg - 5

Spurs were too often too static in front of the midfield man but he was also unable to draw anything out of those attacking resources.

Ivan Perisic - 5

Wasted Spurs’ best chance when finally played in off the last shoulder on a match-long ploy.

Bryan Gil - 4

Struggled to get into the game and was too often shaken off the ball too cheaply.

Heung-min Son - 4

Put himself about in usual bullish fashion but nothing came off for the hard-working forward.

Harry Kane - 4

Dallied on the ball in the build-up to Villa’s second goal and struggled for impact throughout.

Substitutes

Ryan Sessegnon (for Gil, 62) - 6

Looked lively but struggled to force a change in fortunes.

Emerson Royal (for Doherty, 81) - 5

Cameo came too late to stop Spurs’ defeat.

Pape Sarr (for Bissouma, 81) - 6

Oliver Skipp (for Hojbjerg, 87) - 5

Unable to affect proceedings at the death.

Djed Spence (for Perisic, 87) - 6

A rare replacement appearance but again had precious little chance to shine
