Tottenham news: Xabi Alonso answers Spurs and Real Madrid question amid Daniel Levy talks

Your morning Tottenham digest on Friday, May 5.

Alonso breaks silence

Former Liverpool and Bayern Munich star Xabi Alonso has broken his silence on a potential move to Tottenham and Real Madrid as their next manager. The ex-midfielder has impressed in his short spell as the boss of Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, drawing attention from other clubs.

Spurs have been reported to be amongst those, with the need for a new manager to front a new project heading into the start of next season. Chairman Daniel Levy is set to get talks underway with those who are already in jobs to find the right candidate for the role.

"I've been in football for many years, rumours are normal but we still have a lot to achieve," Alonso said in his latest press conference. "That's why my head is 100% here for the last few months. And my head is also 100% here for next season."

Rebuild setback

Tottenham's former technical secretary Ramon Planes has accepted a new job with Real Betis amid links with a return to north London.

The 55-year-old worked at Spurs during the first season of the Mauricio Pochettino era in 2014/15 with a scouting remit and is close friends with the Argentine, who is set to join Chelsea as their new manager. Planes worked under then Tottenham director of football Paul Mitchell before leaving the club.

The Spaniard then went on to work at various clubs in his homeland with spells in particular at Barcelona and Getafe. He has been linked with director of football roles across Europe in recent years, including at Newcastle United and there were reports in recent months hinting at a return to Tottenham and a potential reunion with Pochettino as Fabio Paratici's time at the club headed towards its end.

Bale call

Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have revealed how the club's transfer process works after being turned down by Gareth Bale last week. The American film and TV stars have captured the imagination of the town with their investment and sealed promotion to League Two after a record-breaking season.

Their squad already looks suited to competing at the top end of the division but that didn't stop the Hollywood owners from making a cheeky attempt to lure former Tottenham Hotspur star Bale to the Racecourse. Their efforts to appear to be in vein, though, after the retired Welshman explained his stance on playing professionally again.

"No I don’t think so," he said when asked about another season in English football. "I think I was looking more for a free round of golf off Rob. I'm sure we'll have a chat and a joke but I'm quite happy where I am."
