Tottenham news: Michael Owen makes Champions League claim and Ndombele's Napoli problems

Here is your Tottenham Hotspur morning digest on Monday, September 12.

Owen makes Spurs Champions League claim

Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen believes Tottenham could make the semi-finals of the Champions League this season. Spurs got their European campaign off to the perfect start by beating Marseille 2-0 last week.

Richarlison scored both of Tottenham's goals on his Champions League debut, and Antonio Conte's side travel to Sporting CP on Wednesday in their second group stage game. Sporting CP are currently top of the group after beating Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0.

"They’ve got a great mix, I think they could go far in this competition,” Owen told BT Sport.

“I’m certain they will get to the knockout stages. I wouldn’t be surprised if they got to a semi-final. They’re a very good team, they’re a lot better than they were last year, they’ve got a great team, great stadium, great players – that team is going places.”

Ndombele's Napoli woes continue

It was once again another frustrating afternoon for Tanguy Ndombele despite his Napoli side securing a late 1-0 win over Spezia on Saturday. Linking up with the Serie A team on loan from Tottenham at the end of August, the 25-year-old has so far played a bit-part role for Luciano Spalletti's men.

Coming off the bench for a matter of minutes in the Fiorentina and Lazio fixtures either side of his start in the 1-1 draw with Lecce, Ndombele was an unused substitute on Wednesday evening when the Italians demolished Liverpool 4-1 in the Champions League. Making changes to his XI for Saturday's game against Spezia, the French international was one of the players to come into Spalletti's thinking.

Named in a midfield three alongside Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Eljif Elmas, Ndombele played the deeper of the trio as the other two were given licence to push upfield. That was very much the case for former Fulham man Anguissa as he looked to get on the ball and go forward at every opportunity.

Former Spurs man delivers Haaland vs Kane verdict

Arguably the Premier League's two finest strikers were set to face off on Saturday. Tottenham Hotspur were due to travel to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to take on Manchester City, which would have seen Harry Kane go up against Erling Haaland.

The battle between two of European football's most prolific goal machines will have to wait, however, with the game postponed along with the other nine Premier League fixtures following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

It's no secret that Man City wanted to sign Kane last summer, but a deal couldn't be agreed, with Pep Guardiola's side moving for Haaland this summer as an alternative.
