Tottenham news: 'Incredible' Alejo Veliz backed as Premier League's best player in the air

Former Rosario Central coach Adrian Dezotti believes Tottenham have a unique talent in Alejo Veliz.

The young striker joined Spurs from the Argentinian club for roughly £13m in August and has been kept with the senior squad despite initial links with an immediate loan move away. Boyhood club Rosario are expected to be due a percentage of any future sale as per the terms of the transfer.

Veliz is an imposing figure at over six feet all and scored 11 goals in 23 League games for Rosario last season.

The departure of the talismanic Harry Kane has opened up opportunities previously missing to young Spurs strikers as new manager Ange Postecoglou conducts an impressive rebuild at the club.

While last summer's £60m signing Richarlison has been backed to improve during his second season with the club, the Brazil international has rarely truly convinced on a consistent basis in front of goal at Premier League level. Heung-min Son, meanwhile, has been leading the line but made his name as a winger and the options behind that pair are rather light.

Though caution must be applied as Veliz gets to grips with moving to a new league in a new country, Postecoglou has afforded the 20-year-old minutes in the Premier League during the wins over Liverpool and Luton.

Speaking to The Athletic, Dezotti was effusive in his praise of the striker, particularly highlighting Veliz’s ability in the air.

“I watch a lot of English football and there is no other Premier League player who has the aerial game that Alejo has,” he said.

“It’s incredible."
