Tottenham news: Fraser Forster reveals why he joined Spurs as Conte told to sign Liverpool star

Your morning Tottenham Hotspur digest on Wednesday, March 1.

Forster interview

Tottenham goalkeeper Fraser Forster has spoken about his decision to join the Lillywhites last summer, admitting that he knew he would be Hugo Lloris' understudy when he arrived in N17.

Speaking to The Guardian about settling into life in north London, Forster said: “It’s hard … when you’re used to playing every game or always wanting to play every game. I was aware of what the situation would be but I thought when a club of this stature comes along, the opportunity is there. I thought there would be a lot of games.”

When asked if he believes he will be able to usurp the currently injured Lloris as the club's No.1 'keeper, he added: “Everyone in football dreams of being the number one at a club of this stature and I would like to do that. Equally, I’m fully aware Hugo is here.

Spurs told to target Liverpool goalkeeper

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has urged Spurs to try and sign backup Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

"Caoimhin Kelleher should consider a move away, however Chelsea still have two keepers in [Edouard] Mendy and Kepa [Arrizabalaga]," said Petit when speaking to Boyle Sports. "A club that he would fit in perfectly is Tottenham.

"Hugo Lloris is 36, he has had a few injuries and has retired from the national team, he is not the future anymore. [Fraser] Foster is also 34, so Tottenham may need a refresh in that department.

"Kelleher is 24 years old. In the cup fixtures last season, especially against Chelsea, he was really good. If he wants to cement his own legacy, he should leave and join Tottenham."

Antonio Conte update

Tottenham assistant Cristian Stellini has revealed that head coach Antonio Conte won't be in the managerial dugout for tonight's FA Cup clash against Sheffield United, claiming that his return date will be determined by the doctor. Conte underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder at the beginning of February.

"Yeah, I think this week he'll be back," Stellini said in his pre-match press conference when asked about the former Inter Milan boss. "He's not in charge for this game but our doctor decides the right moment for Antonio to be back.

"It's a question for our medical department because they check with the doctor who did the surgery, they check today every day for the right day for Antonio to come back and I think it will be this week."
