Tottenham news: Clement Lenglet meeting arranged as Steven Bergwijn exit edges closer

Your Tottenham morning digest on Tuesday, July 5.

Djed Spence update

Spurs transfer target Djed Spence returned to pre-season training with Middlesbrough on Monday with an expected departure still likely this summer.

Tottenham have struggled to agree on a fee with the Championship side so far, despite talks still ongoing between the two clubs. Antonio Conte is keen on signing a new wing-back to add competition and quality to his side, heading into a packed 2022/23 campaign.

Fabio Paratici and Spurs are keen to push through a deal for the talented 21-year-old but agreeing on a transfer fee is proving to be a bit of a stumbling block at present. Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder admitted: "Hopefully, it will come to a quick conclusion because that would help everybody," as reported by The Northern Echo.

Bergwijn near departure

Steven Bergwijn looks set to depart Spurs this summer, with Eredivisie champions Ajax looking likely to be the Dutch forward's next destination.

football.london understands that reports suggesting a fee has been agreed with Ajax for Bergwijn are slightly premature, but the move is expected to go through sooner rather than later, with Spurs holding out for a fee as close to the £27million they paid PSV in January 2020 as possible.

Lenglet move edges closer

According to Spanish news outlet Sport, Clement Lenglet's move to Tottenham Hotspur is getting closer to happening.

Spurs, Barcelona and the player's camp, were set to meet on Monday to complete the deal this week. football.london reported last week that Tottenham are in talks to sign Barcelona centre-half Clément Lenglet on a season-long loan deal as Antonio Conte looks to add depth to his centre-back options for next season.

Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Andrea Christensen on a free transfer after the Danish defender left Chelsea following the expiry of his contract at Stamford Bridge. Christensen's arrival could now allow the Spanish giants to allow Lenglet to depart the club for next season.
