Tottenham: Mathys Tel shirt number confirmed after dramatic deadline day move

Done deal: Mathys Tel has joined Tottenham from Bayern Munich - (London Standard)

Tottenham secured the deadline day signing of Mathys Tel in a major boost to Ange Postecoglou.

The Spurs boss had been desperate to strengthen in attack to help combat an ongoing injury crisis and the club won the race to sign the 19-year-old winger from Bayern Munich.

Tel has joined Spurs on loan until the end of the season and the club will have the option to make the move a permanent one for £45million. Should that be activated, Tel will sign a six-year contract at Tottenham.

The teenager will wear the number 11 shirt for the club this season, which had been vacant since Bryan Gil’s summer departure to Girona.

Erik Lamela, Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart are the other players to have that shirt number over the past 15 years.

Tel had rejected a move to the club, despite a £50m move being agreed with Bayern Munich, but the deal was resurrected as he flew in for a medical on deadline day.

The Frenchman has not yet given an interview since joining, but Spurs offered an insight into what they expect from their new signing as they profiled him on their website.

The club said: “Capable of playing anywhere across the front line, Mathys shows willingness to take on his man and put his pace and balance to good use.

“Composed in front of goal and more than happy to have a crack from distance, he will surely find opportunities to excel in Lilywhite.”

It was an eventful conclusion to the transfer window for Spurs, who had a £70m bid for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

There had also been interest in Chelsea’s Axel Disasi, but the Frenchman instead joined Aston Villa on loan.

Tottenham did agree a deal to sign young Liverpool centre-back Luca Furnell-Gill, while midfielder Daniel Batty, also 18, is expected to arrive Manchester City.
